I don’t play on one of “those” trivia teams that tend to win money in lots, and lots of tournaments. Aside from a couple of us on the team, we don’t “study.” We don’t have a well-oiled machine where one person studies, this, another studies that, so on and so forth. But we’re all friends – and (for the most part) enjoy each others’ company! We can be a cantankerous and moody bunch – but I’ve progressed quite a bit since that one time I walked home from a bar after blowing 10 points on a movie quotes question (only to realize I didn’t have my house key and had to walk back – oops!). I would describe my trivia team’s ability to answer trivia questions as “above average!” We’re not perfect…but at least 50 percent of the time we’re “pretty good!”

These days the role of Alex (second from left) is now played by Evan (Alex has since moved to Seattle). The rest of our lineup is still active.
We ain’t professionals. But we’re pretty darn good amateurs. That said, five years ago today, we won fourth place/$200 in a regional tournament at CJ’s in Plymouth. It was the second time my team won tournament money, the first time being in January, 2013 at a tournament in Livonia (I was not present for this game – I was at a sledding birthday party for my niece). I was actually standing on top of the sledding hill when Brad called me telling me we won some $$$! We’ve only won tournament money two times since then – in April, 2018 and in July, 2017.

Scene from that 2013 sledding party. Location is south of Houghton, MI.
Most importantly? Aside from Evan, whom is pretty much just an adorable “hired gun,” we’re all friends. We’ve known Dave for about 20 years, and have known Brad for about 12 years. We’ve been through quite a lot together – and not just at trivia games!
Let’s see how we do in the Dec. 1 championship! I’m not expecting much…I wasn’t even expecting to make it there! But we did it – and that’s something!
