Some people associate Tuesday with tacos…”Taco Tuesday,” you know? If you’re into obscure movie actresses, maybe in addition to dreaming about eating tacos every Tuesday, you think of Tuesday Weld, whose film credits include Looking for Mr. Goodbar and Once Upon a Time in America. She’s also the woman on the cover of Matthew Sweet’s third studio album Girlfriend. Matthew Sweet had a SERIOUS crush on Winona Ryder, but what Gen X guy DIDN’T have a crush on her in the early 1990s (funny Onion article about that here? Want proof? One of the tracks on that album is called “Winona” and he sings about trying to call her but “the line was busy.” Ah, remember the days when you didn’t know who was calling when they called? Before “Star 69” and Caller ID? What a boon that was for crank callers (or psychotics with drooling crushes on Winona Ryder…or hapless high school girls)! I had some “mystery” callers back in high school (that was definitely NOT fun)… It wasn’t even fun if I KNEW which guys were calling (depending on the guy, of course)! There was that guy who called me a few times, and tried asking me to his homecoming dance…I didn’t want to go out with him because he was creepy and I had zero interest, so I used the “I have a band competition that night” excuse. Which I did (I wasn’t making that up). When people talk about wanting to go back to being teenagers again, I think “God no…just no!” I’d never want to re-live my high school days! If I did, I’d try to pass algebra this time, though!

Matthew Sweet is best known for his alternative hit single Girlfriend which peaked at #4 on the Billboard modern rock charts. Other high-charting modern rock hits for Matthew Sweet included Ugly Truth (#3, 1993) and Sick of Myself (#2, 1995).
But enough digression! For our trivia team, Tuesday nights will mean…trivia! At least for the next few weeks, anyway! We’re going to be a “one trivia spot one night a week” team again, and after trying out some trivia spots and talking to teammates…Tuesday it is! As always, our trivia plans are subject to change. We’ll be playing at the Tower Inn tonight and (tentatively) plan to play at Haymaker in Ann Arbor on “Devil’s Night” next Tuesday (we still have prize money to use there). This sadly means our games at Original Gravity are on hold indefinitely, but at least one of us plans to play at the Nov. 15 venue tournament (just for gift cards, not a tournament spot). We’ll re-evaluate playing here again when the new trivia seasons begin in 2019.
So why Tuesday? Mondays are out since one of my players bailed on the only local trivia spot (Powell’s), and the other two of us decided we weren’t too keen on playing at Powell’s anymore either. Wednesdays weren’t shaking out too well…though we have one player willing to play every Wednesday, not all of us agreed on the spots in which to play the games. Thursdays were also not working out very well – we have one player willing to play every game there (me), and another who can come to “some” of those games – and one player who just doesn’t…like Original Gravity (he’s especially bummed that the Spincast beer is no longer being served). With at least two of us being able to play every Tuesday (and sometimes a third), well – onward Tuesday trivia nights ho! We’ll see how it goes from now until December, when my work schedule should calm down a bit.
It’s actually a good time for me to take a bit of a break from Original Gravity. Though I love the place (and the beer – I’m not as picky as my beloved husband is about beer, LOL) and the drive there – it’s become a bit too emotional for me to go here since a 36-year-old player named Maria died a couple of weeks ago. Though I really didn’t know her well, her death still took quite a toll on me. I couldn’t even do a recap of the most recent game there until a few days later (after my vacation). And seeing her teammates struggling in the game without her – not just on the questions themselves – but with the grief of her loss? It’s just…too much. I feel so bad for her teammates Doug and her husband Kyle – there are just not enough words in the world to console people when things like this happen. I know Doug a bit better than I knew Maria, and we talked about this quite a bit. I know this was quite a blow for him – he was absolutely devastated.
I don’t want to give up on OG for good – and one of my teammates Dave really likes playing here too! I have the November 15 venue tournament on my calendar and barring a blizzard, car trouble, or any other calamity I plan to be there!
As they say in that one TV show…. “Winter is coming!” A surefire sign of spring is when the ‘Pods start playing at OG!
