This is one of a series of photo blogs I’m doing about Michigan’s Great Lakes…
Lake Michigan gets most of the attention when it comes to the Great Lakes in Michigan. She has the best sunsets, lots of resort towns (Grand Haven, Pentwater, Manistee, Ludington, Petoskey, Harbor Springs, Charlevoix and Leland to name a few), and countless state parks – and high-end real estate. Lake Michigan is, if you live in Michigan, on the “sunset coast,” and on most nights when clouds and weather cooperate, Lake Michigan sunsets simply can’t be beat! Lake Michigan is the “Marcia Brady” of the Great Lakes. And what would Jan say to that? Yes, we all know! Marcia, Marcia, MARCIA!
However, IMHO…Lake Superior is far…Superior – and the best of all of the Great Lakes. Even better than Marcia! Lake Superior also has the most sunken shipwrecked ships of all of the Great Lakes! Besides that one famous ship Gordon Lightfoot sang about! Does that mean Lake Superior is the Alice (Brady Bunch) of the Great Lakes? I think it does! Alice was pretty awesome! She was awesome enough that my older brother named one of our cats after her! Check her out on the washing machine below (forgive me, we lived in a…mobile home – aka “trailer” at the time). She was part Siamese and had gorgeous blue eyes! And she was ALWAYS attached to me (she was my familiar from a very early age). She slept in my crib with me, and later…my “big girl bed.” Parents weren’t as freaked about Sudden Infant Death Syndrome in the early 1970s!

Alice the Cat with lowly little me, circa 1974. My second birthday. I was a fool for cake and ice cream! Note the dish towel I am wearing as a bib (my mom was practical if nothing else)
Lake Huron has some loveliness all of its own. It’s the “Sunrise Coast,” so it means you have to be an early birdie to catch any real sun action on this Great Lake. UNLESS you catch it at the right angle! I’ve become quite fond of the “Jan” of the Great Lakes over the past few years! She has plenty of white sand beaches, sleepy little resort towns, beautiful state parks, and a charm all of her own. Those snobby rich folks on the West coast don’t know what they’re missing! Behold…

Long story short? I am in LOVE with the Great Lakes! I like Lake Superior best, and as for my second place lake, I will say it’s a tie between Lakes Michigan and Huron…I love them both equally! Lake Erie? Uh, no…Lake Ontario? Not it! I have seen every one of the Great lakes, but I have to say I am partial to Superior, Michigan and Huron!
