Editor’s note: Questions we got correct because of blogs posted on this site will be denoted in bold.
We continued our “road game” trivia adventures Tuesday night and visited Haymaker Ann Arbor for its Sporcle Live trivia scene hosted by Sporcle Trivia Nights With Joe V. Though it was not our first choice for a Tuesday night trivia spot, we wound up happy we chose it since we won a $50 gift card prize for second place in game two! Yes you read that right – $50 prize for ONE GAME!
Haymaker prizes are $75 cash for first place (each game), and $50 gift card prizes for game two (also each game). Interesting dynamic, though we arrived about 20 minutes before the game started, we had more than ample choices of where to sit (third time was a charm as it were…we can be picky, lol)! But the trivia area and bar area filled up fairly quickly with what appeared to be “mostly” college-aged players (though some sitting at a table near us looked to be a LITTLE closer to our mid 40s age range). They could have been in their… 30s (they drank tallboys of PBR)! Still, I’d say most of the players that night were young enough to be my children! I spotted one team I recognized – Drinking Team With a Trivia Problem – whom I remembered from playing Sporcle Trivia Nights With Josh M. shows at the Heidelberg in 2016. Sigh…I kind of miss that trivia spot! The $5 pitcher specials…I think I still have lingering gift card money in my wallet (but I digress)! That is still, hands down, one of the most “unique” trivia spots I’ve ever played and always kind of reminded me of the basement tavern from Inglourious Basterds.

A tense scene from Inglourious Basterds. The “basterd” in the grey coat, Stiglitz, is my favorite character in this film! A true dark ‘n brooding badass, LOL! A fan wiki page describes him like this: “Hugo Stiglitz is quiet, and doesn’t seem to enjoy social interaction.” Read more about him here.
As for the trivia host Joe, we first played one of his shows WAY back in 2012, when he was hosting a late Friday show at the Crow’s Nest in Canton. We won two prizes that night – $15/$10 gift cards. Next time we played one of his shows in March, 2017; we also won a prize – this time $30 for first place. I joked with him after the game that he MUST be a good luck charm!
Mixing it up and visiting different spots is good for breaking up the monotony! Last Wednesday, my husband and I were far too young to know enough about the 1950s Francis the Talking Mule film franchise (this was asked about at the Plymouth ROC last week), which made us feel like…whippersnappers! What made us feel more like “old fogeys” was knowing the answer to a final question about #1 hits from the 1970s and early 1980s (which stumped nearly every team in the room)! Hell, I even remembered my older brother being gaga about one of those songs when he was about 8 or so…
And…the questions!
Game One
1. Lead Singers – Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins have both served as lead singers of what band? 10
2. Voices – The actor known for his work in Black Adder and Mr. Bean voices what character in the 1994 film The Lion King? Nope for 3.

I don’t think too many teams could name this character from The Lion King…
3. YouTube – Name either of the YouTubers who participated in an amateur boxing match in Manchester, England in August, 2018 that was livestreamed for $10 on YouTube’s PPV platform. Nope for 1.
4. U.S. Geography – The state nicknamed “The Peach State” borders how many other U.S. states? The first of three questions I got correct tonight because of a blog post on this site… 5
5. Board Games – Name the room in the “Clue” board game that falls last alphabetically and is not connected to another room via a secret passage. Nope for 2.
6. European History – In 1729, Greenland became a province of what country? 9
7. Sandwiches – What sandwich consists of a hamburger patty topped with caramelized onions, Swiss cheese and is served on rye? 8
8. TV Themes – Audio clue of a series that ran from 1990 to 2000 involving high schoolers and lots of actors who were way past high school age (LOL)! Got this for 7
9. Kids’ Books – What 1943 children’s novella features the line, “Most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or touched – they are felt with the heart. All grownups were once children but few of them remember it.” Nope for 4, but considering how often this comes up as a trivia question topic, maybe this will have to become “assigned reading!” Kind of like when I “assigned” Peter Pan for Mike to read (he enjoyed it)!
10. Olympics – What country hosted the first Olympic games in 1896? For an additional “nerd” bonus point, who hosted the games in 1900? Got both for 6 (Mike was worried about having six points to use on this category). This was the second question on this night I knew because of a blog post on this site!
Mystery – Add ‘Em Up (Yikes these are always awful)
The sum total of the number answers for the following clues will add up to 22. Please note these WILL be heavily abbreviated! I focused more on answering these than writing them down in their entirety. And since we only would get one correct, meh!
1. Number of NFL teams with the letter “k” in their nicknames
2. Closest whole number to the “golden ratio,” commonly represented by Phi
3. Number of Transformers films released between 2007 and 2018
4. Number in the title of the band whose only charting singles were One Thing and Paralyzer
Only managed to get #1 correct (teamwork between Mike and I).
Scores: Sixteen teams, scores 34 to 65, with ??? (did not catch their name) in first. I think they were the eight-person team sitting near the host? We were right around the middle of the pack, in seventh with 51 points.
Final Category – Kids’ TV
We decided to go for it, since every time we decide NOT to wager on this category, it winds up being something we know. This would not come to pass this time 😦
From 1997-2002, ABC aired a block of TV on Saturday mornings called Disney’s One Saturday Morning. In addition to Disney’s Doug, three new series were produced for the premiere of One Saturday Morning. Name one of those three.
Nope. Top teams managed to get this correct..one was called Zen Buddhism – who got 2nd.
Game Two
1. TV Openings – A boy and his father walking down a path with fishing poles while a whistled theme song plays is the opening scene to what series that aired from 1960 to 1968? 10
2. Companies – What company, headquartered in East Aurora, NY was a subsidiary of Quaker Oats from 1964 to 1991 and a subsidiary of Mattel since 1993? Nope for 5.
3. Baseball – Name the first MLB team to log 100 sins in 2018, and for an extra “nerd” bonus, the first team to log 100 losses. Nope and nope for 1.
4. Movements – Carrie Nation was an advocate for what social movement in the 1800s – she attacked numerous buildings with a hatchet to express her beliefs in the cause? Facebook clue, 9.
5. Video Games – “Is It The Shoes,” “Boom Shakalaka,” “He’s on Fire” and “Razzle Dazzle” are phrases popularized in what video game series released in 1993? Miss for 4.
6. Movie Quotes – What word fills in the blanks in the following quote from the 1948 film The Treasure of the Sierra Madre? “We ain’t got no (blank),” “We don’t need no (blank),” “I don’t have to show you any stinkin’ (blank)?” 8
7. Superheroes – Mar-Vell, Monica Rambeau and most recently, Carol Danvers have served as incarnations of what superhero – first introduced in 1967? Mike usually possesses the superior knowledge in this category, but this time I’ll bet he’s glad he listened to me…got for 6. This was the third and last question I knew tonight because of a blog post on this site…
8. Symptoms – What common type of dizziness makes people think they or their surroundings are moving even when they are not? 7
9. Musicians – What artist holds the record for spending the most weeks in a calendar year in the top spot on the billboard Hot 100 charts? Miss for 2.
10. Royalty – What country’s royal regalia are permanently on display at the Archbishop’s Palace in Trondheim even though the monarch lives at the royal palace in Oslo? 3
Visual Mystery –

Missed #3 – the host said all teams missed this one.
Scores: 17 teams, scores 27 to 61, with Salt ‘n Pepa in first. We were in ninth tied with one other team with 49 points.
Final Category – #1 Hits
We wagered zero on this. We’ve been burned by this category too many times…but you know how it goes when you wager zero!
A 1977 song and a 1981 song are the oldest songs to have spent 10 weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Name either of the solo women who released those songs.
As soon as I saw what years they were asking about I regretted not wagering full points since we knew the 1981 singer… Strangely enough, that would not have changed the outcome of the game!
Final scores: ‘Pods, 49; ???, 81 (they were only other team to get correct, they guessed the 1977 singer).
We’ll be back here at some point! Our next trivia night is Original Gravity Brewing Company (can’t resist the lovely country drives there especially since colors are turning). As always, Go Pods, and stay classy, Drake!
