Tonight, I’m bringing a trio of players for a trivia game to the “Wurst Bar.” It’s a bar named for sausages, which is one of the menu specialties at this joint, which dubs itself a “gastropub.” I’m not really a fan of the word “gastropub,” since it reminds me too much of “gastropod,” then I start thinking of eating snails. To that I say “Ewww,” though I guess in some countries, snails, – or “escargot” are a delicacy. More for you, thanks!

This is described as a “Mahalo brat.” Bacon wrapped deep fried spam bratwurst piled high with pineapple mango chutney and topped with housemade sriracha mayo… I just know what I’d say…I will let a Monty Python meme do the talking here!

Anyway…. I started playing trivia here in February, 2016 as part of a “duo” with another woman named Angie. Roughly every week or so, we’d have our “girl’s night” and would also put our heads together in the trivia games. This went on for a few months, then in August of that year, my trivia team kind of took over the “girl’s night.” There was an attempt to reschedule “girl’s night” to a different night of the week, but it just didn’t come to pass. People get busy with work, life. She’s a teacher, and at the time, she was interviewing for jobs in other districts. I still occasionally put together all-female trivia teams and we play under the GDX (Generation Double X) name.
We played for quite a few seasons at the “Wurst Bar,” winning semifinal spots five consecutive times. Then in December, 2017; we decided we would play our last game at Wurst. One of my players announced he would no longer be able to go to games during the winter unless he was given a ride. So for one season, we moved to the Corner Brewery on Wednesdays (so he could walk to games), and moved to Powell’s on Monday nights.
So far, we’ve qualified for two consecutive semifinals at Powell’s, and are currently trying to qualify for a third time. We’re behind the #2 team right now by a mere five points, and have eight games to make up that difference! I’m “fairly” confident we’ll be able to do this again, but if it turns out team Ham Wallets finally winds up getting the best of us and makes it to semifinals, well more power to ’em! They have been bringing as many as nine players to their weekly games, while my team usually just has 2-3 players. All’s fair in trivia and war, right?
I’m hoping we have a good night at the Wurst Bar tonight. There’s nothing really “on the line,” except of course, gift cards! And maybe a little bit of “street cred,” too! It will be nice to go toe to toe with the “Pants Team” there again. Maybe scare some of those other teams a bit! The host there has told me that there were a couple of teams who returned to Wurst after we stopped playing there, LOL!
I am thinking of doing one game next week at the Corner Brewery. One of my team’s other players, Joel, will be moving out to San Francisco permanently (though he will still be in Michigan frequently to visit family), and I thought Corner would be a good send-off spot for him. That was the first place we played as a team back in 2012. I know we won’t have much of a shot against the “megateams,” but it will be a fun change of pace! And a lot of the other teams there seem to enjoy seeing us come out to play.
One of my other team’s players, Dave, is celebrating his 43rd birthday soon. This means I’m going to start dreaming up some birthday trivia questions tailored just for him (and will share them on this blog site)! Might want to be sure you know your Beastie Boys lyrics (LOL)!

So what else is new? I’m feeling the “itch” for a solo game and will be planning one of those soon!
See y’all in the next game recap Thursday!
