(STEELE TRAP WRITEUP) – Trivia Recap – Saturday, Aug. 11, 2018

The Toledo-based team Steele Trap provided this question set from their Saturday, Aug. 11 game at Ralphie’s. I am going to “play along” to see how I would have done on these questions, I was out of town and not present for this game. I will indicate “yup” or “nope” as to whether I know these.

Game One
1. Kids TV: What is the name of the tiger who lived in the Neighborhood of Make Believe on Mister Rogers Neighborhood and has a son with his own show currently airing on PBS? Yup.

2. Canada: What is the most populous and southernmost province in Canada?
Easy, eh?

3. Same Name: What vodka cocktail shares its name with a legendary fortune teller who is said to appear in a mirror when her name is repeated three times?
Hm, I thought it was Biggie Smalls who showed up when you did this. Clearly I’ve watched South Park too much! Yes, I would have known this, but bleah do not drink these…better uses for vodka!

4. Schools: What Big Twelve conference school, the largest full member by enrollment outside of Texas, has athletic teams that use the colors cardinal and gold? Bonus: what is the smallest Big Twelve conference school by enrollment?
I’m going to guess the University of Illinois. Nope…sportsball! My more “sporty” teammates would probably know this.

5. 2018 Music: My Dear Melancholy is an EP released by what singer/songwriter about his relationships with Bella Hadid and Selena Gomez and features the top 10 song “Call Out My Name?”
Don’t know, don’t care…and who HASN’T dated Selena Gomez? this clue doesn’t exactly narrow things down, does it? 🙂

6. Movie Siblings: Molly is the younger sister of the main human character in which animated film trilogy released between 1995 and 2010?
Yup.

7. Games: In the standard 4×4 version of Boggle, in which three and four letter words are worth one point each, how many points within one are awarded for words that are at least eight letters long?
I have not played since this I was like…8. Not it…

8. Pets: In the DC universe, what is the name of the dog belonging to Superman who has gone by the aliases Superdog, Skip, AirDale, and Pal? My husband says Krypto. Yup, he knew this!

9. Countries: A sinologist primarily studies what country?
Nope.

10. TV Comedies: What Fox legal comedy/drama won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy in 1999, ending a five year reign by Frasier?
I’m guessing Ally McBeal. Nope…I have zero head for Emmy Awards – it’s rough enough for me remembering Oscar winners!

Mystery Round: Self Titled Albums – given the titles of three songs from the album and the year of release, identify the band/album.

1. “The Struggle Within,” “Wherever I May Roam,” “Enter Sandman,” 1991
2. “One Note Song,” “Wonderboy,” “Kyle Quit the Band,” 2001
3. “Sexy Sadie,” “Dear Prudence,” “Blackbird,” 1968
4. “Sugar Daddy,” “Rhiannon,” “Landslide,” 1975

Nope on #2.

Final Category: The Great Outdoors
Final Question: Which US state, the 43rd largest by total area, is the smallest state that is home to more than one of the 60 US national parks? Both are UNESCO designated Biosphere Reserves and one of the parks is a UNESCO designated World Heritage Site.

Boy the national parks questions are making the rounds again. Does this mean I gotta study that category (I don’t wanna)!

Game Two
1. 80s Music: What 1980 single by Devo is their only top 40 entry on the Billboard Hot 100 chart?
Yup.

2. Novels: Name either of the US states that served as the beginning or the end of the journey taken by the Joad family in John Steinbeck’s novel The Grapes of Wrath. Bonus for both.
Yup and yup. I had to read that in high school, and struggled to get through it because I had a nasty cold at the time and kept falling asleep from the cold meds when I was reading it (the good cold meds you need to present an ID for these days because of those clever folks who figured out how to make meth out of it). Some kids in the class tried to avoid reading the book (can’t blame ’em, it was dull, dull DULL) and instead watched the old black-and-white movie with Henry Fonda in it. Those kids flunked the test…I did not. I have not read another Steinbeck novel since then, though I am kind of interested in Of Mice And Men. I like that the dumb guy kills people by accident. Plus I like the Looney Tunes parody…

I will hug you, and squeeze you, and call you George!

3. Painters: What 19th century post impressionist painter was known for his self-portraits as well as works featuring sunflowers?
Best artist who ever lived (IMHO)!

5. Lakes: In which state is Lake Itasca, the source of the Mississippi River, located?
Yup.

6. Toys: The Corn Popper is a toy for preschoolers that has been produced by what company since its introduction in 1957?
Yup.

7. Royalty: From 1890 until 2013, what European country was ruled by women (Wilhelmina, Juliana, and Beatrix) and is currently ruled by Willem-Alexander?
Yup. When, oh when will the name “Beatrix” become a popular baby name again?

8. Bands: What American band has had four top 50 songs in the Billboard Hot 100 including “Hey Ladies,” “Brass Monkey,” and “You Gotta Fight for Your Right to Party?”
Yup.

9. Movie Music: Audio clip of an instrumental theme used in a film trilogy, which we needed to identify

I have no idea (LOL)!

10. Cars: What auto manufacturer produces both the Rio and the Sedona? Yup.

I would know all of these…easy!

Final Category: High Grossing Films
Final Question: The highest-grossing movie of all time at the U.S. box office that was never the highest-grossing movie in a single weekend is what 2016 animated film featuring Matthew McConaughey and Reese Witherspoon? It grossed over 270 million dollars in the U.S.

I would have gotten this after a bit of thought…
