Well, we THOUGHT we were going to take a two-week break from Sporcle Live games! The trivia league is on a two-week break from regulation play and will start up again next week. Rainy weather kept us from going to the Depot Town cruise night in Ypsilanti, so two of us instead ventured to Original Gravity Brewing Co. Thursday for its trivia night.
We finished in second for the night, but due to wagering too low on the game one final about books, and wagering too high on an Oscars question in game two, we failed to land in the “money zone.” We had a game one mystery round all about Maroon Five opening lyrics, and since I could only name one Maroon Five song, I put that song for all four of the answers, in the vain hope of getting at least two points out of that round (which we did). There was one other time we did something like this on a mystery round, which was about the TV show Modern Family, where I put “Sofia Vergara” for all of the answers. Hey, any points are better than none!
It looks like there may be a new team in the mix at OG, with new league team Bunchicken playing in some recent games. Welcome! The more competition…the better!
And the questions…
Game One
1. ’90s Hits – Losing My Religion and Shiny Happy People are two top 10 hits in the early ’90s for what band? Ugh, these are my LEAST favorite tracks from this album, that second one makes me particularly stabby when I hear it (LOL)! …Got for 10.
2. Religion – What denomination of Protestantism was founded by a Frenchman in the 16th Century whose grave is denoted only with the initials JC? Got for 9.
3. Video Games – In the Donkey Kong video game series, what kind of animals are Crendlings? Miss for 2.
4. Movie Quotes – Audio clue – identify the 1992 movie associated with the quote “This is my boomstick?” This is abbreviated. Mike had a total “triviagasm” here…8.
5. Vitamins – Multiple choice – Niacin is also known as Vitamin A, B3, B6 or Vitamin D? Got for 3.
6. U.S. States – What is the largest landlocked U.S. state by total area? For an extra “nerd” bonus point, what is that capital of this state? Got both for 5.
7. Big Cases – What 1803 U.S. Supreme Court case established the court’s power of judicial review? Big duh here, missed for 1.
8. Vegetables – Napa, Savoy, and Bok Choy are all varieties of what vegetable? I have been making some things with Bok Choy recently (it’s really good steamed, and is supposed to help alleviate inflammation which is my poor husband’s bane), got this for 7.
9. Directors – The 2002 film Confessions of a Dangerous Mind is the directorial debut of what actor? Miss for 4.
10. Sports Terms – What term is used in rugby and involves players with their heads down in an attempt to gain possession and restarting play? Yay the only rugby term I know turned out to be correct, got for 6.
Mystery – Maroon Five opening lyrics
1. Beauty queen of only eighteen
She had some trouble with herself
2. Spent 24 hours, I need more hours with you
You spent the weekend getting even, ooh
3. Baby, I’m preying on you tonight
Hunt you down eat you alive
4. Just shoot for the stars
If it feels right
And aim for my heart
If you feel like
Got #4 correct…we put this song title for all of our answers!
Scores – Thirteen teams, scores 23 to 55, with Mack in first. We were tied for second with 54 points with Where’s Trey.
Final Category – Books
We wanted to wager something, but not all of it, since we’ve been burned by this category before. So we wagered 10 points…
“Swords”, “Crows”, and “Kings” are the last words in the titles of three of the novels from the same series by what author?
Of course Mike started writing down the answer right away…most teams got this one.
Bunchicken and Verbal Vomit were tied for second with 66, and Mack was in first with 75. This tiebreaker was used to decide second place – in what year was the Supreme Court case Miranda vs. Arizona? I do not know which team won the tiebreaker.
Game Two
1. Advertising – What product has been advertised with the slogan “Nighttime sniffling sneezing….(etc) so you can rest medicine?” This is abbreviated, but was pretty much a gimme, 10.
2. ’80s Movies – In the 1984 film This Is Spinal Tap, the band is always trying to fill what position due to untimely deaths? 9
3. Sunlight – Within two, how many minutes does it take light to travel from the sun to the earth? 8
4. World Cities – What is the most populous city in South America that is on the Pacific coast? Miss for 2.
5. Quarterbacks – Name one of the two quarterbacks who have won the Super Bowl MVP more than three times? Name both for an additional “nerd” point. Got one (yes we did…oh yes we did without any “sportos” in our mix) but not both for 3.
6. Singers – Who served as lead singer of the Stray Cats, who had their biggest hit in the 1980s? Facebook clue, 7
7. Calendars – In what century did Pope Gregory VIII introduce the Gregorian Calendar, which replaced the Julian Calendar? Miss for 4.
8. Actresses – Who made their debut in a 2006 film for which she won the Academy Award for best supporting actress? Miss for 7. We went with a nominee, not the winner (d’oh)!
9. Sitcoms – What 2014 sitcom stars Anthony Anderson and Tracee Ellis Ross in main roles, and Laurence Fishburne in a recurring role? 5
10. Names – Eight of the 10 most common surnames in Mexico end in what letter? 1
Visual Mystery –

Missed #1 and #4, pretty much outright guessed on the ones we got correct.
Scores – Twelve teams, scores 42 to 63, with Mott in first. We were quite a ways back in ninth with 47 (curse you, Abigail Breslin)!
Final Category Iconic Film Roles
Of the six actors who have played James Bond in the Eon Productions series of films, which one was the youngest when he first appeared in the role? He was 30 years old at the time.
We wagered and got this. I knew that only one actor playing Bond was working as a model at the time, and older folks don’t usually tend to work as models! I wasn’t sure whether this movie was part of the EON Productions canon or not, so we still took a risk by wagering.
Bah, it was to no avail. Getting this right was not enough to put us in the top teams (curse you Abigail Breslin AND Alan Arkin – curse the whole cast of Little Miss Sunshine! That movie was depressing AF, talk about two hours I want back…)
Game winners: Mack, 81; Mott, 83.
Well that’s it for our trivial pursuits this week! We will be back at it Monday at Powell’s. As always, Go Pods and stay classy Ash Williams!
