So, I’m looking at the league numbers for the qualified MTL teams for the upcoming semifinals/finals. And it’s raising some questions! If I were a character in Jesus Christ Superstar…well, I’ll just let this meme do the talking!

I am kind of… conflicted. If a notable barhop-based “ringer” team is not in the mix this time, well…I SHOULD be happy that there could be less competition in the room! But for some reason, I also feel kinda…empty about this. At least a couple of players on this team are people I’ve known for YEARS. If I don’t have them to try to beat, then… what’s my motivation?

Why is this even an issue? Because in trivia,  we all need our “teams to beat!” Where would Sherlock Holmes be without Moriarty? Where would Laura Ingalls be without Nellie Oleson? Elliott Ness without Al Capone? Where would Doctor Who be without those pesky Daleks? Where would chess Grandmaster Bobby Fischer be without Boris Spassky? Where would AC Milan be without Inter Milan? Manchester United without Manchester City? Celtic without Rangers?  Tonya Harding without Nancy Kerrigan? Hatfields/McCoys? Jan without Marcia? Have I made my point?

I don’t know how things are going to shake out. It’s still early. I’m sure if we don’t have our usual “rivals” in the room, I will figure out some other team to try to beat! But it just… won’t be the same.

On an unrelated note, I MIGHT be doing a Thursday night trivia game! Depends on weather. If weather is good, then I will go to the Depot Town cruise night, so no trivia. If weather is rainy, then POSSIBLY trivia! Sometimes I like leaving things up to chance!
