Oscar Nominees – 2000s Movies (REVISED MARCH 6, 2019)

The decade of the 2000s was one of change for movies. In 2001, the category “Best Animated Feature” was added, and for you trivia nerds, the very first film receiving an Oscar in this category was Shrek.

shrek-2jpg.jpeg

Ugly is the new hot? Shrek spawned four sequels, totaling a box office gross of $1.4 billion domestically and $3.5 billion worldwide.

The decade of the 2000s in film also saw a good deal of diversity in films, with two nominated films released in 2000 both being foreign language films Chocolat and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon; a 2005 film featuring a relationship between two gay men (Brokeback Mountain) and lastly, a 2003 fantasy film won best picture (The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King). What better way to celebrate diversity than a film featuring hobbits, elves, orcs, dwarves and nazgul? 🙂 I remember when this ceremony was airing, my husband and I were on a trip to Chicago, and watching in a hotel’s restaurant. Yes, we were very, very excited to see this one win best picture!
