Top Grossing Movies – 2018 (Year-End)

This is a list of the top grossing movies at the U.S. box office from 2018. I will periodically update this list (probably about once a month or more often than that, when I think of it), so please, please…continue checking in!

The stand-alone Aquaman has made a HUGE splash! Sorry, can’t avoid that turn of phrase! As of the end of 2018, it made $189.3M! I honestly WANT a DC movie (one that is not about Batman) to do well to give the almighty Marvel franchise a run for its money. Speaking of, DC will release Shazam in April, 2019. I saw a preview for it when we went to see Bumblebee, and I have to say I was…impressed! It seemed to have a nice edgy Kick-Ass vibe to it (I really liked the Kick-Ass movies, BTW). I think going a more humorous, light-hearted route might be the way for DC to go. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery? Take a page from Deadpool’s box office success?  Seeing Billy Batson beating up a bully with one of his crutches brought a genuine smile to my face!

What do the letters SHAZAM stand for? Could be a trivia question!

I haven’t seen too many 2018 movies. Let’s see…Deadpool 2, A Quiet Place and Black KKKlansman are three I can think of (I really enjoyed that last one…well played, Spike Lee)… We watched The House With the Clock In Its Walls on Christmas Eve (based very, very loosely on a book I loved as a kid), and saw Bumblebee over the weekend.

Bumblebee was AMAZING! Loved the whole ’80s retro vibe, reminded me of how my sister-in-law Mel must’ve been in 1987 (the 18-year old character Charlie is a HUGE fan of the band The Smiths). I think Bumblebee ($67.1 M) has an uphill climb, considering stiff competition from Aquaman, also because it’s the umpteenth Transformers installment (moviegoers may be a bit weary of this franchise). Maybe the leading lady Hailee Steinfeld isn’t as much of a draw? I’d love to see Bumblebee do a bit better, and possibly generate a sequel (I love that feisty yellow ‘bot as much as my husband does).  I’ve kind of tuned out of the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies as of late…I have ZERO interest in seeing Venom. As for Captain Marvel, which is being released in 2019? I’ll think about giving that one a look!

So far, Deadpool 2 is the fifth highest grossing movie of 2018.

Black Panther ($700.0M) remains at the top of the money heap in 2018, with Avengers: Infinity War ($678.8) nipping at its heels. Honestly, I’m kind of “meh” about the Marvel movies these days, though I did go out to see Deadpool 2 ($318.4M). I’m a sucker for good improvisation, and Ryan Reynolds certainly has quite the talent with humorous dialogue! I also really, really enjoy the countless pop culture references sprinkled throughout both of the Deadpool films, especially all of the ’80s music references! The Norwegian band A-ha released an “unplugged” version of their 1984 hit song “Take On Me,” which is featured in the end credits of Deadpool 2.

For you music trivia nerds, Take On Me hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. For the record, they cannot technically be considered a “one-hit wonder.” Their other charting songs included The Sun Always Shines on TV (#20),  Cry Wolf (#50), and  Dark is the Night For All (#111). They also recorded the title song for the 1987 James Bond film The Living Daylights, though it did not chart in the U.S. Hey…you’ll thank me if a question about A-ha ever comes up on a trivia night (you’re welcome)!

And let’s get on with the movie list, shall we? The box office numbers here are based on domestic box office grosses per box office mojo.
