I didn’t go out to see too many movies released in 2017. But there are quite a few on this list that I do want to see eventually! One of the ones I saw was Wonder Woman, which I really enjoyed! It’s interesting to note that the top three highest-grossing films of 2017 all featured prominent females – Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Beauty and the Beast and Wonder Woman.

Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman
We also had sequels in 2017! So many sequels! And remakes! And superhero films! Coco appears to be the top grossing movie that wasn’t a remake of a previous film or part of a franchise. Gal Gadot was in a couple of 2017 films, The Rock was in at least a couple, Hugh Jackman was in at least two of these (I still want to see The Greatest Showman). Cars 3 didn’t fare too well (epic Pixar fail, it only grossed $152M). Dunkirk ($188.0M) and Get Out ($176.0M) were the highest grossing films receiving Academy Award nominations for best picture, and Coco won Oscars for both best animated feature and best original song.
It seems to me, from a movie maker’s perspective, sequels must be a crap shoot. Sometimes the second installment of a film will make more money than the first (Shrek 2 is an example, as well as Terminator 2: Judgment Day). But sometimes…maybe it would have been better to leave the movie as a stand-alone. Just because someone wanted to see something the first time around doesn’t necessarily mean they want to see it again! I refer to the case of The Matrix sequels (we did not need either of those). It should be MORE than apparent by now that the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise needs to be sent to Davy Jones’ locker, and the Allspark needs to be ripped by force from any more Transformers sequels. The whole “killer doll” thing is played out, too.

This will solve a majority of problems with evil dolls!
I REFUSE to see any of those silly Fifty Shades movies. Why? If I want to get my bondage on, I’ll just watch Bound! The Fifty Shades movies don’t go far enough, imho…I mean really…would it KILL Anastasia to burn Mr. Grey with a stogie? Throw him down on the bed? Does HE ever get tied up in these movies? Sorry, bored now! I just think sexual power should be shared. How fun is a one sided battle? I am totally kidding about all of this, BTW (pssst not really)! And I am just running off my mouth! What the hell do I know about movies? Not much! I just try to learn about ’em for trivia games!
And with that, I’ll get right to it! And here I go with the movies that made the most money in 2017 based on domestic box office grosses. As always, consult boxofficemojo.com for the most up to date box office numbers.
