Editor’s Note: While in the process of trying to do a recap of the Spring/Summer trivia season at Original Gravity, I discovered with horror that I could not find a recap of one of the games on this site! So I just finished what wound up being a very, very tedious search on the Facebook page, as it decided to be a bitch and make me find this the hard way. Long story short…I present you with this game recap!
We began the Sporcle Live season Thursday at Original Gravity Brewing Co. with an unceremonious thud – 59 points overall, no prizes. And we had a “Sex and the City” question, which we will now view as a bad omen every time this topic comes up in the game. We’ll see how this season shakes out for the ‘Pods with 12 more weeks to go! The last time we played an entire season at OG (missing just one game), we averaged about 112 points per night, which put us in third place in the overall standings at the season’s end, and we finished in second place at the end-of-season venue tournament (though we used the barhop route and were not trying to “conquer” the bar). And the questions…
Game One
1. Doctors – What is the 12-letter word for a doctor who operates on the brain? We put down the name for the doctor who specializes in studying the bones, not the innards…which also has 12 letters (I have watched way too many forensics shows…), though we did think of the right doctor AFTER we handed in our slip! First sign game was going to be rotten…miss for 5.
2. Bowl Games (just twist that knife, will ya? Give it a good twist!) – Since 1965, college football’s Liberty Bowl has been held annually in which U.S. state? Nope…
3. ’80s Movies – What was the name of the opposing dojo in the 1984 film “The Karate Kid?” For an extra “nerd” bonus point, what Joe Esposito song is used in the montage sequence? Yay points for both!
4. Food – A sugar bush is a forested area where what food product is cultivated? FB clue…
5. Toys – What brand of folding kick scooter was first distributed by the Sharper Image company in 1999 and became extremely popular in the 2000s?
6. 2000s Albums – What band offered an online “pay what you want” deal for their 2007 album “In Rainbows?” And I knew this one because my brother gave me an MP3 player for Christmas and put some of his favorite songs on there (he is such a big fan of this band that he named one of his cats after a band member).
7. Politicians – What politician with a colorful name was elected governor of California in 2011 and remains in that office to this day? Had the right answer initially, but changed it to the wrong one (had to have first and last name). Facepalm…
8. South America – What is the smallest country to border Peru? Again, considered right answer…but nope. Success in this game was not to be!
9. Cars – The Escalade is a full-size luxury SUV marketed under what brand name?
And to make things worse…
10 TV Jobs – On the TV show “Sex and the City,” what fashion and lifestyle magazine does Carrie work as a free-lancer for? Miss…but you already knew that, right?
Maybe we can make up some points with the mystery round? Read on to see (pssst…we won’t…)
Which Came First – Pick the thing that came first in the group of three. What? Can’t even flip a coin? Ugh…
1. Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Chicago Tribune
2. Amazon, eBay, Craig’s List
3. WNBA, Arena Football, Major League Soccer
4. Enterprise, Hertz, Avis
And #3 is the only one we got correct.
Scores – Eighteen teams…we were “kind of” in the middle with 46 points, tied with two other teams. Team Mellows was in first with 60 points.
As of 2017, what is the most recent country to have hosted the Olympic Games (Summer OR Winter) whose national flag does NOT include the color blue?
Good news is we picked a country that hosted the Olympics and doesn’t have blue in its flag. Bad news is we went two years too early…and we wagered on this.
Teams Rich’s Bitches and Mott and Significant Others were in a tie for first. They had to settle this tiebreaker – Alanis Morrissette and Marilyn Monroe share a birthday how many years apart? Rich’s Bitches won the tiebreaker and got first (go them, they seldom win any prizes here).
Game Two
1. Pizza – What pizza chain has used the slogan “Gather Around the Good Stuff?” Got this for 5.
2. Baseball Players – Name one of the two athletes to have won the World Series for both the Yankees and the Mets. Name both for an extra “nerd” point. Nope and nope…
3. Constellations – What animal is the English name for the constellation Aquila? Bear, snake, eagle or lion? Got this…
4. Anatomy – What organ located in the neck of mammals is commonly called the voice box?
5. Hit Songs – What disco song with a weather-related name was a hit for the Weather Girls in the early 1980s?
6. Cameras – In 1888, George Eastman offered his first camera, with a simple box design, and its name still associated with photography today? Overthought this one…miss.
7. Book to Movie – Dog Days and Roderick Rules are subtitles to used in what book series in which some of the books were made into films?
8. Nickelodeon – Audio clue of show we never heard of…miss.
9. Star Wars – What is the name of the green-skinned bounty hunter shot by Han Solo in the cantina? Yay Star Wars…

10. Product Taglines – “Never Let them See You Sweat” was a tagline for what antiperspirant brand? Every team missed this one…Speaking of things that make you sweat, lol…bad trivia games!
Visual Mystery – https://www.sporcle.com/blog/visual/country427/ Got all of these…
Scores – We were in fourth this time with 53 points of out of 13 teams. Team Good King Snugglewumps was in first with 58 points.
Final Category – Fictional Characters
What fictional character that was introduced in 1974 has been played on screen by Ray Stevenson, Thomas Jane, and Dolph Lundgren? Picked the wrong character played by Dolph Lundgren…miss.
Game winners: Steven Hawking Treadmill, 74; Slightly Moist, 68.
Until next time…which will be next Tuesday! Yes, this is part of our new “lean and mean” trivia schedule! As always, Go Pods, and stay classy, Drago from “Rocky 4…” Seriously…weren’t ’80s movie montages the absolute best? Over ‘n out!
