(Lost Recap) – Trivia Recap – June 9, 2017 – Original Gravity Brewing Co.

Editor’s Note – yet another “lost” recap for y’all to chew won while the “archiving” process continues today (LOL)

The rock band Faith No More recorded a song on their 1992 “Angel Dust’ album called “A Small Victory.” Which brings to mind Thursday’s Sporcle Live game at Original Gravity Brewing Co., hosted by Trivia With Matty Ice. In the song, Mike Patton (who was very, very hot, imho…) sings, “The small victories…The cankers and medallions…The little nothings…That keep me thinking that someday…I might beat you…But I’ll just keep my mouth shut.” The word “might” is key for us at OG this season…we “might” win a venue tournament here in July. Or we might fall flat on our faces. Our “small victory” Thursday was winning a $10 gift card/second place in game one, even though we had to wager zero on a “social media” final question to get it! That’s just one of the “little nothings” giving us hope in this lackluster trivia season. David and I battled the questions Thursday, and wound up losing quite a few of the question battles, but finished with a “sexy” 69 points (how’s that for a small victory?)… We failed on a “planets” question that our teammates Mike and Brad would have easily known had they been there. We also missed big on a “big cities” question involving Arizona…ouch! Meh, these things will happen whenever you don’t have the right brains in the mix! And the questions, some of which may be heavily abbreviated…
Game One
1. Dolls – The signature of Xavier Roberts can be found on what soft dolls that were one of the biggest toy fads of the 1980s?
2. Dual Roles – What Golden Raspberry-winning 2011 film starring Adam Sandler features him playing himself as two different characters? And for an extra nerd bonus point, what Academy award-winning actor appears in the film? Not very confident, got this for 2, no bonus.
3. NBA Stars – Shaquille O’Neal ended his career playing for which NBA team? Cavaliers, Celtics, Knicks, or Hawks? Miss.
4. Planets – Due to the high volume of carbon dioxide creating greenhouse gases, which planet is the hottest? Miss for 5.
5. 2000s Music – What group, named for an article of clothing, hit #1 with a 2007 song called “Hey There, Delilah?” Usually I am weak on this decade in music, but knew this one for 9.
6. Logos – What insurance company, founded in 1897, has featured a breaching humpback whale in its advertisements since 1997? Don’t think too many teams got this one…miss for 1.
7. Musical Instruments – In a traditional orchestra, name one of the two musical instruments that use a double reed. Easy for former band nerd…wish they had offered bonus points for naming three other double reed instruments (though not all used in traditional orchestras).
8. Games – In the game of billiards, what color is the 1 ball? Thankfully Dave knew this one…he knows much more about balls than I do, lol…
9. Arizona – After Phoenix and Tucson, name one of the two next most populous cities in Arizona. Miss for 6…we went with a city that is #8 on the list (nice try though, Dave…at least you had a guess!).
10. Non-profits – What is the name of the faith-based non-profit organization known for helping Americans at their most vulnerable? I think one of the “clues” was that it starts with the letter “v,” but I really didn’t write all of this down…
Mystery – Tom Hanks quotes – Identify the Tom Hanks film based on the following quotes
1. “Wilson….”
2. “All my life I’ve been waiting for someone and when I find her, she’s… she’s a fish.”
3. “There’s no crying in baseball.”
4. “Sometimes life just catches up with you.”
Missed #4.
Scores – Thirteen teams, ,scores 20 to 58 with Team Mott in first, we were in seventh with 49 points. Dave and I kind of prayed we would be asked some obscure final question only we would know, which unfortunately, did not happen,….
Final Category – Internet (can I swim under a rock now?)
As of May 2017, who are the most followed man and most followed woman on Twitter who are not primarily known as musicians?
We went with a guy who is #34 on the list and a woman who is #12 on the list overall. So not too far off with our woman guess, but we wagered zero…
Final standings: ‘Pods, 49; Good King Snugglewumps, 60 (moved up from 12th place, nice going!).
Game Two
1. TV Kids – What are the names of Tim Taylor’s three kids on “Home Improvement?” What, not Huey, Dewie and Louie? Dave remembered actually watching that show, but nope, blank stares here for 1.
2. Golf – How many golfers are on a Ryder Cup team? Way too confident, miss for SIX.
3. Classic Rock – “Happy Jack” was the first hit for what British band? For an extra nerd bonus point, what song did they record featuring the name of a goddess? Usually the two of us are good at classic rock questions, but nope on this and the bonus (though we did think about this band and this goddess…so close!).
4. Microsoft – What is the name of the intelligent personal assistant introduced by Microsoft that is now a standard component of Windows 10? I had this as a My Trivia Live question last year and missed it, putting down “That pretty smart lady who lives inside my smart phone and tells me how to do stuff.” Glad I learned from that mistake, remembered her name this time!
5. Comedians – Audio clue of guy talking about Steve Irwin, Dave got this for 4.
6. Same Name – What is the shared name of a Netherlands queen and the first name of the “Peter Rabbit” author?
7. Magazines – What magazine, founded in 1997, features an annual list of up and coming hip-hop artists and has a three-letter title? Miss for 3.
8. Asia – The small island state of Macau, owned by Portugal for more than 400 years, was ceded back to what country in 1999? The qualifier “island state” steered us as wrong as Magellan here, and fittingly enough, steered us toward the place where he met his maker, which was incorrect…miss for SEVEN. Yes, our victories in this game were very, very small indeed! Who has a scanning electron microscope? 🙂
9. Title Characters – David Carradine played the title character in what 2000s film series directed by Quentin Tarantino? FB clue.
10. Arcade Games – In what classic arcade game does a player control Chef Peter Pepper, who runs around making burgers? Really? Did we have to have the “making burgers” clue? That was one of my favorite games…loved the menacing eggs and pickles! Little did the game creators know that people would one day put fried eggs in addition to just about everything else on their burgers – onion rings, fried shrimp, bacon, ham, Doritos, macaroni and cheese, cheesy poofs…how is one supposed to wrap a mouth around all of that? Or did I just walk into a “That’s what she said” joke? Groan…Seriously, though, people are putting way too much crap on their burgers, it is getting ridiculous…doesn’t anyone want to taste the meat? Oops, I did it again…OK, I will stop talking about overly loaded burgers now! Grumble, so much crap on burgers…
Mystery – https://www.sporcle.com/blog/visual/logo68/ Missed #1 and #3.
Scores – Twelve teams, scores ??? to 61, with Error 404, Trivia Team Not Found in first. We were in ninth with 40 points. Ick…
Final Category – Presidential Elections
In the 1980 U.S. presidential election, Jimmy Carter won six states, including his home state of Georgia and his running mate’s home state of Minnesota.
Name any of the other four states that he won that year.
We decided to wager 20 on this and considered the “west” state that would have been correct. But we didn’t consider it seriously enough to write it down… 😦
Team Mott wound up getting this one correct and winning first. Team Taco wagered zero and got second. Tough, tough question. I was only 8 when this happened (whine). Yes, that was a bit of a rough night, but we’ll shake it off! These things happen. As always, Go Pods! We’ll see you in the next recap! Could a weekend game be in our future? 🙂
