Trivia Recap – July 3, 2018 – Powell’s Pub

There has to be a first time for everything! I completely misplaced my notes from Monday’s My Trivia Live game at Powell’s Pub! Rest assured I’ll do my best to remember the questions…there will still be a game recap! I’ve misplaced portions of notes in past trivia games – in an April, 2016 venue tournament at Arbor Brewing Company (Brewpub) in Ann Arbor, I had some notes for a mystery round completely…vanish. My story at the time was that the ghost reported to haunt the restaurant/pub stole my notes while we took a brief break from our table between games. There could be some truth to my story – a police officer named Clifford Stang was shot and killed while on duty on March 21, 1935 while investigating a robbery. You can read more about that here. Yes, I know it’s completely implausible. There are no such things as ghosts, right? In light of other weird, unexplained things that happened while me and my team played there, I’ll just say “I want to believe.”

Hedge my bets? Consider the following – my husband Mike had someone jab him in the side while we were playing there one night – AND NO ONE WAS SITTING NEXT TO HIM. I joked that the ghost was probably taking a dim view at how he was treating me, lol…Another “weird” occurrence was me having answers “mysteriously” float into my head on at least a couple of occasions. It really was as though they were…whispered to me. One such answer was “Prokovief,” the composer of “Peter and the Wolf.” Sure, it could have been buried in my brain, but there was something weird about how that answer came to me that I… still can’t quite explain. In that same game (October 2015) I also decided to mysteriously wager four points on a final question wager in a venue tournament. Without thinking – I just decided “four points.” To this day I can’t explain why I wanted to wager that number, but it wound up allowing our team and one other to both advance because of a tie at the end. Maybe I can’t chalk that up to Mr. Ghost! But it’s all part of the whole “weird” package of playing there. Now let’s see how much I can remember from Monday’s game questions! I’m not going to organize them by rounds, just number ’em…
1. Animals – What animal, up until the 1600s, was known as a “camel leopard” because of its camel-like appearance and leopard-like spots? Got it.
2. Fruit – What type of sour fruit was the subject of an Aesop fable with the fox? Got it.
3. Vegetables – What type of vegetable is bok choy, which is commonly used in Asian dishes? Got it.
4. Abbreviations – What does SMS stand for in text messaging parlance? Miss.
5. Song Lyrics (bonus question) – What is the name of the preacher’s son in the Dusty Springfield song “Son of a Preacher Man?” For an extra three point bonus, what specific time is mentioned in the Huey Lewis and the News Song “Heart and Soul” describing the time “she left without warning?” Knew the bonus question, missed the main question. I thought the bonus question was much easier (but then I was pretty immersed in music in the 1980s, even if I was not really a Huey Lewis and the News fan). My commentary about him and this band was, “Their music was…mostly harmless. Not very exciting, but ALL OVER the airwaves and MTV. Huey always had the ‘I just walked off the golf course’ look, and he wasn’t TOO hard on the eyes.”

Preppy rock star Huey Lewis

My commentary on Huey Lewis has NOTHING on the commentary by Patrick Bateman’s character in American Psycho. Look it up on YouTube, but DO NOT WATCH IT. It’s gory and there’s…blood and stuff. Do you hear me – DON’T watch it! 🙂
6. Space Exploration – Scheduled to be launched in 2021, the James Webb telescope will replace what other telescope? Got it.
7. Medals – What is “the” medal in math circles, which is akin to a Nobel Prize? Total duh…miss.
8. Cocktails – What other type of alcohol, besides champagne, makes up the other half of Hemingway’s “Death in the Afternoon” signature cocktail? Miss…maybe we should drink a few of these!!!
9. Star Wars – What last name did Luke Skywalker originally have in early scripts of “Star Wars?” Got it.
10. NHL Teams – Name two of the three NHL teams that do NOT have the letter S in their names. Got both.
Halftime – movie quotes
Given the year and the quote, identify the movie.
“Here’s looking at you, kid,” 1942.
“You had me at hello,” 1996
“I love the smell of napalm in the morning,” 1979
And…I can’t remember the other one. But we got all of them correct.
We were in third going into the final question about superheroes.
Stan Lee revealed that in 2009, what person wanted to play Spider-Man so badly that he offered to buy the Marvel company in order to do it?
We missed this, but wagered low enough to get a $10 prize. Two Can be As Bad As One finished second, Dan Smith finished first.
Our next trivia outing is Thursday at Original Gravity. See you in Friday’s recap! Have a happy Fourth of July, everyone!
