Trivia Recap – June 26, 2018 – Powell’s Pub

It was a very, very competitive trivia night Monday at Powell’s Pub! We continued our three-week prize winning streak by taking a third place/$10 gift card for third place, but were ultimately taken down by a halftime question about a drunken prophet, a boxing abbreviation question, a superfood, a brief South American skirmish, and a question about a hybrid animal in addition to the final question, which every team missed. We had our “three amigos” trio, and finished third for the night behind two barhop teams – Says Who – and One is the Loneliest Number (which as departure from his normal “m.o.” he rustled up a “trivia pardner” and played as a duo Monday night) finishing with a near perfect score of 73. And the questions…
Round One
1. Alphabets – What is the second letter in the Greek alphabet? 5
2. Zodiac – What crustacean serves as the symbol for the zodiac symbol Cancer? 3
3. Anatomy – Where specifically in the human body would you find the thyroid gland? 1
Round Two
1. Toys – Manufactured since 1939, Lego building blocks originated in what country? 3
2. Space – Approximately 2.5 million light years away, what is the nearest major galaxy to the Milky Way? 5
3. Animals – The offspring of a male donkey and female horse is called what? For an extra three point bonus, the offspring of a male horse and female donkey is called what? Did not attempt the bonus, got this for three.
Round Three
1. Movie Music – “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ On My Head” was a song used in what 1969 film? Brad and I teamed up for 5 points here.

Robert Redford and Paul Newman in a scene from movie mentioned above.

2. Collections – What does a philatelist collect? 3
3. Automobiles – What company makes the “Fit,” which is called the “Jazz” in Europe? 1
Halftime – Identify the performers’ stage names based on their birth names
1. Norma Jean Mortensen
2. Carlos Estevez
3. Cornelius Chase
4. William Clark Duffenfield
Missed #4, though it seemed so obvious when the answer was revealed (nothing like an MTL trivia night to make us feel like young whippersnappers)!
Halftime scores:
Six teams, scores 39 to 73, with One is the Loneliest Number in first (playing under the name Two’s Company) with 39 points. We were in third with 32 points, tied with Ham Wallets, with Says Who in first.
Round Four
1. Olympic Sports – Which country invented bobsledding? Newsletter bonus, 6.
2. Competitions – What is the name for a long trimmed tree trunk or log tossed in highland competitions? We’ve been to too many Scottish festivals for us to have any excuse to miss this one! Such brawny lads, those highland athletes (pardon me while I daydream about weightlifters in kilts, ahem), got this for 4.
3. Comic Strips – In which comic strip did Eugene the Jeep appear? Some questions make us feel like young whippersnappers, this one made us feel…kinda old!
Round Five
1. Authors – Who wrote The Legend of Sleepy Hollow? 6.
2. Food – Alligator, pear, cheese pear and bulb pear are words for what food item? Miss for 4.
3. Catastrophes – Under contract to BP, what was the name of the offshore drilling company responsible for one of the largest oil spills in U.S. waters in 2010? 2
Round Six
1. Boxing – What does RSC stand for in boxing parlance? Miss for 2.
2. War – In what year did the Falklands war between Argentina and England occur? This couldn’t have been a “within one” question? Dammit, we missed by one year! Had another conflict in our head that happened a year later, miss for 4.
3. Mythology – Depicted as having wings and carrying an arrow, who is the god of love, affection and attraction in Roman mythology? Almost overthought this one (ahem…I’m looking at you, Mike), but we rescued ourselves and got this for 6.
Scores: Six teams, 39 points to 73, with OITLN aka Two’s Company in first. We were tied for third with the Golden Yaks with 58 points, behind Says Who with 63 points.
Final Category – I am actually unsure how this category was…categorized. I didn’t write it down. But here’s the question…
Astronaut Pete Conrad uttered what one-word phrase in the Apollo 12 mission as a means of settling a bet with an Italian journalist to prove that astronauts’ words were not scripted?
No teams got this one correct…we wagered low and managed to stay in third, other standings remained the same.
That’s it for this recap! We’ll be playing Thursday, so I’ll have another recap posted on Friday. As always, Go Pods, and stay classy, W.C. Fields!
