Trivia Recap – June 5, 2018 – Powell’s Pub

We played our “halfway there” My Trivia Live game Monday at Powell’s Pub. Seven games in and six games to go, we managed to widen our lead in the bar’s standings, though as a trade-off (and isn’t there always a trade-off with us?), we didn’t win any nightly prizes. We can’t have it all, can we? It was an interesting mix of questions…who knew that a certain vegetable is sometimes called “lady fingers?” We didn’t, apparently…Also, who knew that the city of Portland, OR was almost named another name? We didn’t know that, either – nor did we know what Spanish city has adult playgrounds for senior citizens (let your mind have fun envisioning this). As for which English artist was the first to play in the “new” Wembley Stadium? Nope! We thought our guess was pretty good, but nope! We DID happen to know what international soccer star managed to stop a Nigerian war for a day! Despite all of these flubs, we were in third with 63 points going into the final with “just the two of us.” Read on to see what other questions we got right – and wrong!

Round One
1. Candy – What lollipop brand has used the query “how many licks does it take to get to the center” in its advertisements? 5
2. Companies – Men with the last names Coen and Greenfield are the founders of which company, which they began after taking a $5 correspondence course teaching them how to make ice cream offered by Penn State? 3
3. Children’s Literature – What is the name of the protagonist in the title which includes the words “No good very bad day?” Yes, it was starting to look like a “no-good, very bad game,” lol…Miss for 1.
Round Two
1. Soccer – In 1967, the Nigeria Civil War ground to a halt because they wanted to watch what athlete compete in an exhibition match? Really, who else could it be? David Beckham wasn’t even born yet, and Christiano Ronaldo would not be born for another nearly 20 years, 5 points.
2. Legal Terms – A trial by judge as opposed to trial by jury is referred to as what kind of trial? 3
3. T.V. Characters – Tiberius was the middle name of what TV captain? For an additional three point bonus, what were revealed to the be names of Ted Mosby’s children in “How I Met Your Mother?” We were SO bummed the three point bonus wasn’t about “Star Trek!” No teams in the house got the three bonus points, we missed for 3.

Round Three
1. Food – Generally eaten as vegetables, which edible green seed pod is known in many English-speaking countries as “lady fingers?” Miss for 1.
2. Weather – On a severity scale of one to five, what number or higher is classified as a “major hurricane?” 3
2. State Nicknames – (this category worried us a bit) What state is known as the “Badger State” because of the actions of miners in tunnels? This question is abbreviated, but was pretty much a “gimme” for all of the teams…5 points.
Halftime -Song Geography – Identify the city or state in the band names of the song titles given.
1. Hair of the Dog, Love Hurts
2. Dust in the Wind, Carry On My Wayward Son
3. Take My Breath Away, The Metro
4. Saturday in the Park, 25 or 624
Got them all, 10 points! If Kim were there and this was a music trivia night, she’d say this round was all “sh– Heather knows!” I’m just glad it was nothing TOO recent, lol…
Halftime scores
Dan Smith, 19; Says Who, 24: All About That Bass, 29; Happy Birthday, 32; One is the Loneliest Number, 33; ‘Pods/Golden Yaks, 35; Ham Wallets, 36.
Round Four
1. Football – What college football team defeated Cumberland College 222-0 in 1916? Newsletter bonus, 6.
2. Playgrounds – Which Spanish city is home to hundreds of playgrounds designed for senior citizens, with the goal of increasing activity and alleviating loneliness? We could name exactly two Spanish cities, picked the wrong one of the two, miss for 2.
3. City Names – The two founders of Portland, OR were torn between naming the city Portland after Portland, ME or calling it what name, which shares its name with a New England city? Miss for 4, though we did discuss the right city.
Round Five
1. Pokemon – In 1998, What U.S. city named itself “Topekachu” for a day to mark Pokemon’s U.S. debut? What happened to Pokemon Go? Do people still play that? 6
2. Presidents – Which two U.S. presidents died within hours of each other on a day 50 years after the signing of the Declaration of Independence? 4
3. Concerts – After the demolition of the “old” Wembley Stadium, what English singer was the first to perform when the stadium was rebuilt and re-opened in 2007? Should’ve known better than to guess the guy we did…wasted chance that we’d been given…anyone see what I did there? Anyone?  Miss for 2.
Round Six
1. Dog Breeds – Queen Elizabeth II has owned more than 30 of what what dog breed since 1952? This was a little “royal” trivia I recently soaked up. And apparently, she lets the dogs do whatever the f— they want. If only the other members of the royal family had it so good! I’ll bet Princess Diana wasn’t allowed to just piss and crap wherever she liked! Did I just get a weird image in your heads? Sorry not sorry! 6

2. Movie Roles- Who was offered the role of the mayor of Hill Valley in Back to the Future 3 after leaving office? 2
3. Car Models – An online vote in 2011 determined “Prion” to be the plural of what Toyota car model? 4
Scores leading into the final:
Dan Smith, 49; Says Who, 56; All About That Bass, 57; One is the Loneliest Number/Pods/Golden Yaks, 63; Happy Birthday, 64; and Ham Wallets, 66.
Final Category – Famous People
What writer once said that he was the only person to have met John F. Kennedy, Robert Kennedy, Lee Harvey Oswald and Sirhan Sirhan?
No idea…we discussed at least three different contemporary authors, but not the correct one. We wagered zero. Two teams managed to get this correct…
Scores: Ham Wallets, 66 (zero bet); Golden Yaks, 67; and Says Who, 76 (moved up from fifth). Go Francis and a first place win! Don’t spend that $30 gift certificate all in one place! Wait…you kind of have to!
That’s it for Monday’s game recap! We’ll be playing again Thursday at Original Gravity, though with only 1-2 players. Our “third man” had a better offer come up on Thursday night involving IPA and snacks, but should be back to join us soon! As always, Go Pods, and stay classy, Biff Tannen!
