Trivia Recap – May 18, 2018 – Original Gravity Brewing Co.

It was the trivia game that ALMOST didn’t happen. Really. Mike and I were enjoying some beer and appetizers on the patio at Sidetrack before the game. Weather was lovely, moods were good. Did we really want to end the evening driving to a trivia game a half hour away? I offered to call it off if Mike wanted. “Just say the word, and I’ll send a text,” I said (I offered to do this several times). He said “No, not when we have other players who agreed to come out to play.” Judging from how many big points we blew in game one, we were starting to think that maybe we SHOULD have stayed “local!” Fate, however, had not yet played its hand! We wound up finishing in first for the night and winning our first Sporcle Live gift card prize in about a month! We had three ‘Pods plus a special “guest,” who proved their trivia “mettle” a few times! Speaking of “mettle,” we had a final question in game two where the topic was a homonym of “mettle!” Yes, we had a final question about “thrash metal” music! Read on to see what that question was and to see other questions that really tested our “mettle!”
Game One
1. Bathrooms – In May, 2018, Howard Schultz announced that what company for which he is chairman would allow all customers to use their restrooms whether they are paying customers or not? 10
2. Cop Movies – What actor’s first feature film was “48 Hours,” which was released in 1982? 9
3. 2000s TV – What TV sitcom that aired from 2006 to 2010 centered around the production of “Mode” magazine? Our “guest” stepped in for the big points here, got for 8.
4. 19th Century Novels – Henry Fleming was a Union soldier during the U.S. Civil War in what 1895 novel? Correct guess for 2.
5. U.S. Borders – Within one, how many U.S. states, not counting lake borders (but counting river borders) share a border with Canada? Miss for 5.
6. Sports Words – In what sport is the word “peloton” used? Mike with right guess for 4.
7. Web Sites – What web site, the 12th most visited, is the leading wire service for streaming video games? I am not 100 percent on this question’s wording…but we missed it for 6. I will give the hint that it’s a subsidiary of Amazon just to make up for this wording not being very clear…
8. Burials – Since 1820, every British monarch has been buried on or near what building? Miss for 7. Yes, this was even the FB clue question. Spring fever? Two of us looked at the FB clue before the game, but we just didn’t put two and two together when we hear the question (this happens…).
9. Rappers – In 2018, two rappers have tied or beaten a record previously held by The Beatles for having six songs simultaneously in the Billboard Hot 100 charts. Name one of those artists, both for a “nerd” bonus point. Antisocial, no teams got even one of these right.
10. Medicine – Encephalitis is the inflammation of what part of the body? 3
Mystery – BD initials – all correct responses will be people with the initials “BD.”
1. Singer whose highest charting hits including “Rainy Day Women #12 and #35” and “Like A Rolling Stone.”
2. 27-year-old WWE wrestler known for a move called “rolling the dice.”
3. Actor nominated for the 1978 film “Coming Home” and the 2013 film “Nebraska”
4. Mayor of New York City since 2014
Missed #2.
Scores – Ten teams, scores 38 to 61, with Verbal Vomit in first. We were in fifth with 52 playing under the name “Leather Tuscadero Fan Club.” Teams This is Sparta and Big Heads Big Hearts were both tied for second with 58 points.
Final Category – U.S. Presidents
In addition to briefly attending business college, which 20th-century president took night courses at Kansas City Law School, but dropped out after two years, making him the most recent president who did not earn a college degree?
Got it, but so did enough teams ahead of us, so no prize! BHBH and This is Sparta were in a tiebreaker, which meant they had to answer how many miles long is the border between Alaska and Canada. BHBH won the tiebreaker, so they got first, This Is Sparta got second.
Game Two
1. Logos – Prior to adopting its current “peacock” logo, NBC’s logo was shown depicting notes on what musical instrument? A bit of debate, but got this for 2.
2. Food – What name is given to rolls of seaweed used in the construction of sushi? “Guest” came through again for big, got this for 10.
3. Home Runs – The MLB team with the most home runs hit at their home stadium with 149 by a single team plays their home games at what venue? David very excited to get this one for 3.
4. Toys – What toy introduced in 1998 by Tiger Electronics used the phrase “Let’s Have Fun” and was recently re-launched with LCD eyes and the slogan “A Mind Of Its Own?” A bit of debate, but I managed to pull this one from the depths for 5. Photo tie in of similar toy depicted on “The Simpsons,” which was called “Funzo.” THESE THINGS ARE CREEPY! If I had kids, I would not buy these for them no matter how much they begged and cried! These are just…wrong.
funzomeme
5. Bands – What band reached the top three of the Billboard Hot 100 charts between 1979 and 1991 with songs including “Babe,” “The Best of Times,” and “Show Me The Way?” Me again with the answer, got this for 9.
6. U.S. History – Audio clip of “Drunk History” describing a woman who may have worked as a spy during the U.S. Civil War. I want to be a guest on this show and talk about the Dodge Brothers! And I would want my drinks to be vodka collins cocktails. Now who wants to see me get drunk on TV and talk about the nouveau rich Dodge Brothers – who refused to open mail unless it was addressed to both of them, pissed off Henry Ford by starting their own company after being shareholders in his fledgling company and even gave their employees free pitchers of beer – at work – in addition to a special “space” where they could work on cars/projects on site after hours? These guys (who were both drunks by the way) DESERVE to be profiled on “Drunk History,” even if not by me! And I think Luke and Andrew Wilson should be the Dodge Brothers (not Owen…Andrew needs the work anyway)!
7. Rhymes – In its most common version, what is the last word of the “Jack Sprat” nursery rhyme? Miss for 1.
8. World Borders – Name either country forming a land border between South America and Central America. Name both for a “nerd” bonus point.
9. Mail – As of May, 2018, how many U.S. Postal Service “Forever” stamps can be purchsed with $10? Miss for 6. Ouch…
10. 2010s Movies – Jason Bateman and Melissa McCarthy appeared together in what 2013 film sharing its name with the type of crime committed in the film? 7
Mystery –

Got all of these.
Scores – Nine teams, scores 33 to 58, with ??? in first (did not catch their name). We were tied for third with Big Heads Big Hearts with 57 points.
Final Category – Metal Bands
I certainly wouldn’t wager on this category based solely on MY knowledge of metal bands! But we had both Mike (former “metal boy” in high school) and Dave (also knowledgeable in metal) playing, and I was told our “guest” knew a bit about this genre, too! OK, good, we’ll wager 20!
In 2010, The Big Four: Live from Sofia Bulgaria, was released, a live concert recorded earlier that year featuring four bands, collectively known as “the big four” of thrash metal. Name two of those four bands (our bar had to name three).
I came up with one correct one right away, just because it was a band I remember a guy friend in high school really, really liking (he wrote their name all over everything, book covers, notebooks, etc.). Honestly though, I would be hard-pressed to even define “thrash metal!” Good thing the other players were all over naming the other two.
Cinderella story! The last place team jumped up to second from ninth with 53 points and we moved up to first. First gift card win since early April! Yay!
That’s it for trivia until next Monday at Powell’s. Good luck to the teams playing in the My Trivia Live finals Saturday! We’ll be curious what teams finish in the top 3! We didn’t make the finals this time, so we’ll just try to enjoy a little Great Lakes time “Up North” for a couple of nights! As always, Go Pods, and stay classy, Leather Tuscadero!
