Trivia Recap – May 15, 2018 – Powell’s Pub

Won our first $30/first place prize of the My Trivia Live season Monday at Powell’s Pub, albeit in a slightly “cowardly” way! It’s nice when you can slay a tough final question by getting it correct – but it’s still a bit nice when you can NOT get it correct along with every other team in the room – and still win some prize money. We missed out on prizes last week at Powell’s, and have been in a dry spell for prizes in Sporcle Live games since April 15 (yes, a whole month). Since we didn’t manage to qualify for the MTL finals this time around, we’ll take the prize money as a “consolation prize!” Our regular “duo” did fairly well battling some of the very unusual questions! Read on to see how we fared on them…
Round One
1. Inventors – While Alexander Graham Bell wanted to use “Ahoy” as a standard phone greeting, which inventor pushed for using “Hello” instead? My trivia “pardner” Mike said that when he lived in Panama in the early 1990s, “Bueno” was the standard phone greeting there. Personally, I like “ahoy” and sometimes I answer the phone by saying it! Got this for 3.
2. Comic Books – For what newspaper did Lois Lane and Clark Kent work? 5
3. Poker – In a standard poker game of seven-card stud, how many cards does each player get – facing up? Miss for 1.
Round Two
1. Companies- What company was founded on ideas published in a paper written by Yale student Fred Smith about delivery service in a computer age? Miss for 3.
2. Fictional Locations – What is the name of the castle and court associated with the legend of King Arthur? 5
3. U.S. States – Which U.S. state is first alphabetically? For an extra three point bonus, which U.S. state’s residents are called “Nutmeggers,” since the state’s unofficial nickname is “The Nutmeg State?” We were given the clue that the state is a New England state, but that didn’t give us enough of a cue, no bonus points.

Round Three
1. Olympics – What was the last year the Summer and Winter Olympics were held the same year? I had to step up and try to be the “sports” person here…and managed to successfully do it (someone give me a gold medal, lol), 1. How do you like THAT, Brad? More prize money for us? 🙂 You snooze, you lose? OK, I’ll stop now!
2. History – What term was coined in 1845 and referred to the expansion of the United States across the entire North American continent? 5
3. Music – In his version of the popular song, what city does Frank Sinatra call “That Toddlin’ Town?” Miss for 3.
Halftime – TV – Given the name of the characters, identify the series listed below.
1. Jim Halpert, Michael Scott, Dwight Schrute
2. Roger Sterling, Peggy Olson, Pete Campbell
3. Les Nessman, Dr. Johnny Fever, Jennifer Marlowe
4. Dave Nelson, Jimmy James, and Bill O’Neill
Missed #2 and #4.
Halftime Scores: One is the Loneliest Number, 17; ???, 19; Dan Smith/Says Who, 22; ‘Pods, 24; and Ham Wallets, 33.
We’re going to have our work cut out for us if wanted to stage a second half comeback! Let’s see how we do!
Round Four
1. Designers – What designer is credited with designing “the little black dress?” Newsletter clue, 6.
2. Weapons – Developed in the 1970s, what non-lethal weapon’s inventor was named for his favorite book – Tom Swift and His Electric Rifle? Mike with right instincts on target for 4.
3. SCIENtists – Born in what is now Croatia in 1856, what inventor is known primarily for his innovations with alternating current? 2

1. Retail Companies – What outdoor clothing/equipment company was founded in 1912 and named for its founder? 4
2. NBA Which Hall of Famer has the second most points for his career and also for the most free throws attempted and made? Time for me to pull a NBA player’s name out of my brain! Will it be the right one? Of course not! The answer is not ALWAYS Bill Russell, after all! When they revealed the answer, I asked “Wasn’t he that guy that they always made fun of on The Man Show?” Miss for 2.
3. Same Name – What name is shared by both an Eagles song and a 1988 film starring Mel Gibson and Michelle Pfeiffer? 6

Round Six
1. Landmarks – What mountain monument in North Dakota began in 1948 and when finished, will depict what Native American? Mike all over this for 6.
2. Measurements -Which Beaufort wind scale number designates hurricane force? No teams got this one…miss for 2.
3. Advertising – Usually in a medieval setting, what repetitive phrase is commonly said in commercials for Bud Light? I’m really, really glad Mike was all over this one and #1. I wouldn’t have known either of these on my own #takestwototangointrivia.
Got this for 4.
Scores heading into final: Says Who, 34; ???, 37; One is the Loneliest Number, 47; Dan Smith, 50; Ham Wallets, 51 and ‘Pods, 56.
Final Category – Costumes
What movie costume sold for $3 million in 2014 and was the highest known prize paid for a male performer’s costume?
When the answer was revealed, it seemed SO obvious…but no teams got it. We took a risk and wagered just 4 points (hey, wagering low can be just as risky as wagering full points! Don’t be calling me a sucker now)…
Final scores: 11 (???), Dan Smith, 50 and ‘Pods, 52.
Our next trivial pursuits will be Thursday at Original Gravity Brewing Co., where we are waging a futile quest for gift card prizes (geez, it’s the 2017 summer season all over again, lol). Next recap on Friday. As always, Go Pods, and stay classy, Thomas Edison!
