Trivia Recap – May 13, 2018 (Steele Trap Write-Up)

Editor’s Note: I do not usually leave the commentary from other trivia recap writers in when I post recaps written by other recap writers. But I am doing it this time with the intro, with the “guest” writer’s words in quotes (the rest of the commentary will be mine, as I “play along” to see how I would have done on the questions). Please note I will put in “my” guesses for answers, not all of which I’ll confirm as correct by using search engines. This is purely a “just for fun” recap to give you guys the questions and some silly commentary, read at your own risk, lol… And here goes with a trivia recap written by Matt from the Toledo team Steele Trap, from a Saturday, May 12 game at Ralphie’s Oregon.

“If you’re a loyal follower of this page, you’ve probably noticed that we haven’t posted much lately.

Well, our most frequent player, your hapless recapper Matt, has gone and gotten himself a life.

Consequently, our forays into the trivia world have been far less common.

Regardless, Matt got himself over to Ralphie’s Oregon this past Saturday. He played well, managing to end up in first place before each final, but missed both of them, winding up with a pair of third place finishes.”

End of all commentary by Matt S. The recap continues with my commentary….

Game One
1. Tools: Claw, sledge, and ball peen are some of the varieties of what type of tool?
Yup. These tools are FUN!

2. Sports: What sport played in teams of four humans and four horses has been an Olympic sport on five different occasions, the most recent of which was 1936?
My guess is chariot racing.

3. Accidents: Within 1, in what year did the DeepWater Horizon oil spill occur in the Gulf of Mexico? Bonus for the exact year.
Got it within 1. I did check this one (my guess was 2009)…

4. Comics: What comic strip title character introduced in 1954 lives with characters named Phil, Dottie, Barbie, and Billy?
I quizzed my comic strip boy husband on this one (who has deep nerd knowledge of the “Blondie” strip, among other comics) and he drew a blank. So we would likely miss this one. Not that he ever plays Saturdays anymore (he is not a fan of the host at our Saturday spot, so it’s usually just me and “millennial boy” Evan if we have a team at all on Saturdays, unless it’s a “deciding” game). Yeah, our team is not without its drama!

5. The Beatles: Name either of the two Beatles songs that hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 that were also title tracks of albums.
I’m guessing Let It Be and Yesterday.

6. Advertising: What brand of cough syrups has advertised itself as the #1 pharmacist recommended brand for cough, cold, and flu combinations?
Facebook clue…

7. Leaders: Reggie Watts serves as the leader of the house band on the late night talk show hosted by whom?
No clue.

8. Games: In what board game can a player land on spaces that say “Flat tire – lose next turn,” “You’re fired – select new career,” and “Stock market slumps – return one stock?”

I’m guessing “Life.” Sounds like a dreadful game I’d never, ever play…pass.

9. Countries: After Brazil, what is the largest country by area in South America?
Don’t cry for me, Argentina…

10. 90s Movies: What is the first name of the character portrayed by Gary Sinise in the 1994 film Forrest Gump?
Yup. Lieutenant Day-un.

Mystery Round – Add Em Up. Sum is 104
1. The number of books in the main series of Harry Potter books that contain the letter F in their titles.
2. The sum of the numbers in the titles of the first seven full length movies in the Fast and the Furious film series
3. The number of home runs hit by Barry Bonds in the 2001 season, an MLB record*
4. The number of minutes in the title of a 2008 single by Madonna featuring Justin Timberlake and Timbaland

My brain hurts just looking at these, lol…I HATE add ’em up mystery rounds!

Final Category: 70s Music
Final Question: The Carpenters released three singles that hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Name two of them.

Nope. I checked this answer already. And now I have “Top of the World” running through my head. Thanks a lot, Karen Carpenter! So SAPPY!

There is a funny scene in the 2012 remake of Dark Shadows where Barnabus Collins is watching The Carpenters on TV. He refers to her as a “tiny songstress.” I think “Top of the World” is the song that is playing. Pardon me while I go throw up a little in my mouth, lol…

Game Two
1. 70s TV: What TV series that aired on ABC from 1975 until 1979 had characters with the last names Horschack, Epstein, and Barbarino among others?

Yay I’m old! Now up your nose with a rubber hose! 🙂

2. Video Games: In a 2009 video game released by Popcap Games, what two groups are “vs” each other?
Huh? What just happened? 🙂

3. Glasses: Of the following standard size glassware, which holds the least liquid when completely filled; Collins glass, highball glass, martini glass, or sherry glass?
I know my booze vessels…definitely a sherry glass…

4. Movie Brothers: What is the last name of brothers Anthony and Joseph who have directed three films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the most recent being Avengers: Infinity War?
Nope.

5. Flags: What country holds the Guinness record for having the oldest continuously used national flag, in use since 1625 with a design of a white cross on a red background? It is NOT Switzerland.
Yup, merry old England.

6. Coaches: Audio clip of an irate coach berating the press for criticizing one of his college players, culminating in the exclamation “I’m a man! I’m 40!” Had to identify either the coach or the school he coaches.

Even if I could hear this audio clue, I wouldn’t have a clue…I would probably guess Bobby Knight because my knowledge of coaches is pretty thin.

Chair throwing should totally be an Olympic sport!

7. US States: How many US states end in the same letter as the begin? Bonus: name them all

Ooh, this sounds fun! Let’s see…Arizona, Alabama, Alaska, Ohio…are there any others? Nope (I checked this one)! Whee! Can I get a sticker? 🙂

8. Novels: What 2008 novel is divided into three parts, two of which are titled “The Victor” and “The Tributes?”

I’m guessing that this is something I didn’t read. Hunger Games?

9. Animals: What animal has the longest tail of any land mammal, growing up to eight feet in length?
I got a “lifeline” from my husband on this one…he says giraffe.

10. First Hits: What song with a repetitive title was Destiny Child’s first #1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100?
I’m guessing Independent Women Part 1 or some shit. This was popular at my 10 year high school reunion. But I have no idea if I’m right.

Visual:

I’m guessing Theresa May, Nelson Mandela, George Washington and Napoleon. Seems easy.

Final Category: Movie Heroes
Final Question: In June 2003, the American Film Institute released 100 Heroes & Villains, a list of the top 50 heroes and top 50 villains. Two of the top 50 heroes and one of the top 50 villains are from the Star Wars universe. Name two of those three characters.

Han Solo and Darth Vader….easy. Now to watch Han Solo shoot Karen Carpenter in the Star Wars cantina (bwa ha ha ha)! F— Karen Carpenter! She got her sugary singing voice by making a deal with the Devil, and when she reneged on the deal, bam…Anorexia Nervosa. That’s my fan theory and I’m sticking to it, dammit! And I STILL have that that sappy song in my head…groan…My team will be playing tonight, so I’ll have a “for reals” game recap posted Tuesday afternoon! No silliness! Well, maybe a LITTLE silliness…

abitsilly
