Trivia Recap – Powell’s Pub – March 27, 2018

A ‘Pods duo visited Powell’s Pub for its weekly My Trivia Live scene Monday, won a third place/$10 prize and are continuing to hold onto our first place in the standings. But that’s not NEARLY as exciting as getting a final question about a TV series that we’re not only binge-watching right now – but a very specific episode of that series which I have actually read the “wiki” page for on several occasions (including very recently)! Now who says it doesn’t pay to watch the boob tube? Congrats to One is the Loneliest Number for taking what we hear is a second consecutive first place prize for the “rolling” jackpot between Powell’s and McShane’s Pub Ypsilanti (are you taking note of this, Stacy)? If OITLN wins first place again tonight, he gets $150, unless it has gone up. One comment I’ll make about the game is that it was a WHALE of a game! And you’ll see what I mean if you read on! And the questions (which will be abbreviated)…
Round One
1. Actors – Which SNL alumnus played the title roles in “Wayne’s World” and the “Shrek” films? 5
2. MLB – In October, 2017, which former Twins manager took the helm with the Detroit Tigers? Miss for 1.
3. Continents – Which continent is least populous of them all? 3
Round Two
1. Internet – Shawn Fanning and Sean Parker founded what file-sharing Internet site in 1999? Oh what fun that was! 5
2. Logos – Mobil Oil has used what mythical creature in its logo since the 1930s? 3
3. Song Lyrics – Besides “space cowboy” and “gangster of love,” what do “some people” call Steve Miller, per the lyrics in “The Joker?” For an extra three point bonus, what street is mentioned by name in “Movin’ Out?” Sergeant O’Leary moonlights at a bar on this streets. Made a guess on the bonus, but missed it, so no points, wagered 1 on the main part of the question. We guessed a street that’s also used as a Billy Joel album title.
Round Three
1. Candy – Debuting in 1930, what is the best-selling candy bar of all time? Miss for 3.
2. Landmarks – What additional four letters originally appeared on the legendary “Hollywood” sign? 5
3, Automobiles – What sports recreation vehicle manufactured by Pontiac from 2001 to 2005 included options such as a removable center console cooler and a tent/mattress package that allowed the car to double as a camper? It’s terrible when you remember a car because of how ugly you thought it was! 1
Halftime – Identify the pets based on the clues
1. Richard Nixon’s cocker spaniel and name of one of his speeches
2. Name of Sabrina the Teenage Witch’s cat
3. Michael Jackson’s pet chimpanzee
4. Billy’s pet mogwai in “Gremlins”

My husband says she is his favorite “Archie” character…can’t imagine why!
Got them all. And the answer for #2 just kind of…appeared in my head as if by magic. I’ve never read the Archie comics, never watched the TV show. But the name of that damn cat just magically showed up in my head. Explain that! This is not the first time such a thing has happened in trivia games, and it’s not the first time it’s happened in questions about THIS show! Now pardon me, I have a cauldron to stir (where’s that eye of newt)?
Got them all. Good! We needed to make up some ground in points!
Scores: Says Who, 26; Snopes, 27; ‘Pods, 32; Ham Wallets, 34; One is the Loneliest Number, 35; and Dan smith, 36.
1. Authors – From which of his favorite authors did Jimmy Buffett borrow the line “Be good and you will be lonesome”? Newsletter clue, 6.
2. Fortune 500 – Within one, how many Fortune 500 companies are headquartered in Michigan? Miss for 2.
3. Album Covers – What band’s 1975 album cover is seen below? Got this for 4.
wishyouwereherecover
Round Five
1. Rock – Name two of the general classifications of rock, 6.
2. Cereal – In 1934, who became the first athlete to appear on the front of a Wheaties box? Had the right sport, not right guy, miss for 2. This clearly was NOT shaping up to be one of those games where I managed to get the sportsball questions correct! Grrr…sportsball! Curse you (shakes fist at sky). Wait…is this how I have to pay back the little “gift” I got in the halftime round involving that cat? Meh, OK, I’ll take it! 🙂
3. Art – Jackson Pollack was best known for what specific type of art? No teams got this one right…we were “half right” with our guess. This was the first of two “specific” question that will lay us low this game…read on to find out what the other one will be!
Round Six
1. Animals – What “specific” (this is the key word here) animal has the largest brain of any animal that has ever lived? Miss for SIX. Had the right animal, not the right species.
2. NBA (really….REALLY? Sigh…) – Former NBA player Ron Artest legally changed his name to what in 2011? Mike with right guess here (but for only 2). Strange magicks were definitely afoot this night!
3. Mascots – Bullseye is the mascot for what retailer? 4
Finished the regular rounds with 54, which would put us in fourth behind Dan Smith, 58; Ham Wallets, 60 and One is the Loneliest Number, 63. I’m blaming this game on Moby Dick, lol! Now pardon me while I go chase that cursed white whale!
Final Category – T
Airing only once, what FOX TV series aired an episode called “Home” in its fourth season, which would be the first time a TV show was given an MA rating because of its content?
Just watched this episode days ago…and also re-read the wiki article about this episode.
Final Scores: ‘Pods, 198; Dan smith, 116 and One, ??? (did not write down score).
Well that’s it for now, We’ll be back at it again on Wednesday at Arbor Brewing Company (Ypsilanti). An exciting development is there could be more than one player named Heather in this game (oh the humanity)! Never a dull moment! As always, Go Pods, and stay classy, the Peacock Brothers!
