Trivia Recap – March 23, 2018 – Original Gravity

This is what we used as our team name in Thursday’s game…poor, poor Charlie Brown! He has NO idea what he’s gotten himself into! Good grief! 🙂
Three of us visited Original Gravity Brewing Co. Thursday for its Sporcle Live trivia scene hosted by Sporcle Live with Lauren. No prizes, just lots of off-color conversations about Etruscans (they really were lewd, filthy bastards), Phoenicians, and…Margot Robbie. In other words, a typical ‘Pods night of trivia! Both final questions sounded so, so good…ancient geography (which really excited Mike) – and ’80s song lyrics (which really excited me). Only one team in the house managed to get the ancient geography question correct, and NO teams managed to get the ’80s lyrics question correct. Clearly we’re going to need to begin learning more about the early 1980s band that did the songs about “the dark continent” and Patricia Arquette’s sister. And did y’all know they had FOUR singles that peaked in the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts? I wonder who can name more than two of those singles? Our score from the game can’t be seen in the standings at OG. Let’s just say we have decided to make it an “incognito” game because we’re not in contention at the bar this season – and didn’t want any of the league points tallies to change among the “regulars.” Even though it was the game that didn’t “technically” happen, here are the questions from that game!
Game One
1. Words – What seven-letter word describes both a brand of dish detergent and one of a series of small waterfalls? 10
2. Basketball Teams – Two different schools have been seeded #16 and have defeated #1 teams. Give the nicknames of both of those teams. For an extra nerd bonus, give the nicknames of both of the teams they defeated. David knew one of them for sure, but no others – so miss for 1.
3. Netflix – What is the name of the Netflx original series debuting in 2018 involving the AV club and drama club at Boring High School? FB clue, 9
4. State Borders – Of the eight states that border Missouri, name the one falling last alphabetically. 8
5. Games – Within 1, how many letter “A” tiles are there in a standard Scrabble game? Talked ourselves out of the right answer, miss for 3.
6. Sickness – What was the name of the two-word disease that killed 3 percent of the world’s population in 1918? 7
7. Albums – Green River, Pendulum, Cosmo’s Factory and Willy and the Poor Boys are albums recorded in 1969 and 1970 by what four-member band? Dave for the points here, one of two music questions he helped us get, this one for 6.
8. Candy – What Hershey bar is made of chocolate, caramel and peanut wafers and has used the slogan “more than a mouthful?” Dave again for 5.
9. ’90s Movies – Audio clip of people singing “Say A Little Prayer” from a 1997 romantic comedy. Big “duh” faces all around, though we did manage to name some 1997 movies…just not rom-coms. Sigh, I guess “Titanic” wasn’t a romantic comedy, lol (we did not put that as our answer, even though I thought there were plenty of laughable moments in that movie in addition to the romantic drivel…I am weird). Miss for 2
10. Books – Peter Mark Roget is best known for publishing what type of reference book? 4
Mystery – Crosswords
1. Eight letters, salty yeast-based Australian food spread (a lewd joke answer involving a hot Australian actress “may” have been mentioned by SOMEONE here…ahem).
Margot-Robbie-Harley-Quinn
I’m using this photo here just to make up for the lewd joke I made about her during that mystery round! Also, because it’s MARGOT ROBBIE AS HARLEY QUINN! And I am just now noticing she has a baseball bat…yeah baby, bludgeoning someone to death is FAR more personal than using a silly gun! I like your moxie, Harley Quinn!
2. Six letters, Japanese single-edged Samurai sword
3. Eight letters, soft form of carbon used in pencils
4. Seven letters, Pacific hurricane, typically in the China Sea
Got all of these. Finished regular round with 60 points.
Scores: Fourteen teams, scores 23 to 60, with us (playing under the name “It’s A Spaghetti Breakfast, Charlie Brown” in first.
Final Category – Ancient Geography
The cities of Motya, Soluntum, and Zyz were all important ancient Phoenician settlements on what Mediterranean island?
Apparently these settlements were important enough for us to remember them…LOTS of different Mediterranean islands were discussed!
Final Scores; Here for the Cheese, 54 (wise zero wager); Mellow Lite, 60 (the only team to get this correct).
Game Two
1. U.S. History – What was the last U.S. state admitted to the union? For an extra “nerd” bonus, in what year did this happen? Got this for 10, missed the bonus (off by one, I ALWAYS do this, as Charlie Brown would say, “Aughh!”
2. Film Series – What film series debuted in 1979 and had installments subtitled “The Motion Picture,” “The Undiscovered Country” and “Nemesis?” 9
nemesissnatchmeme.jpg
I started saying this quote from Snatch after the answer was revealed…what a great evil villain “Brick Top” was!
3. Authors – What single-named author wrote the novel “Push,” featuring a 16-year-old girl named Clarice, who calls herself “Precious?” Isn’t that the name of the little dog in “The Silence of the Lambs?” A whole lotta nope here, lots of teams took a long time handing in their slips on this one, we missed for 1.
4. Moons – Titan, the second-largest moon by diameter in the solar system, orbits what planet? Mike for 8 points.
5. ’70s TV (I got really excited about this category and said, “Yay I’m old”) – Keith, Laurie, Tracy, Christopher and Danny are siblings on what 1970s sitcom? 7
6. Tourism – Montego Bay is a tourist destination in what country? 6
7. Video Games – What survival video game by Epic Games released a “battle royale mode” free-to-play edition in September, 2017 and has been described as the “biggest console PC game in the world right now?” Nope, miss for 2.
8. NFL Draft – Since 1967, when the AFL and NFL held their first joint draft, what team has had the most overall first draft picks, with six – doing so in both 1967 and 2012? Miss for 3.
9. Fast Food – What fast food chain based in Wichita, KS since 1921 has a “Cravers Hall of Fame,” honoring its super fans? 4
10. Bands – What band had top 20 hits with “Sugar We’re Going Down,” “Dance, Dance” and “Centuries?” Dave manages to get this one nearly last second, 5.
Visual Mystery –

Got them all. This round was ALL Mike…I never knew the jackal-headed guy had a name! Glad he did…
Finished round with 57 points.
Scores: Fourteen teams, scores 19 to 60, with Subaru Brothers in first. We were in third with 57.
Final Category – ’80s Song Lyrics
The 1982 song “Africa” by Toto mentions two mountains – one in Africa, and one not. Name both of those mountains.
Dave and I argued about which mountain to put down for the “second” mountain. I thought mine was more “rhymy” We went with his more “big” guess, but didn’t matter, both of our guesses were wrong…
No teams got it right, Subaru Brothers finished first with 50 points, did not catch who finished second.
Until next time, which will be Saturday. As always, Go Pods, and stay classy, Anubis the Jackal-headed dude!
