Trivia Recap – March 6, 2018 – Powell’s Pub

In Monday night’s My Trivia Live game at Powell’s Pub, our two players unsuccessfully attempted to “profile” a female singer – and a marine animal. Some of the comments? “That’s a ‘white girl’ name, and she was probably born in the 1970s,” and, “That’s not their pattern of behavior (about octopuses).” Yes, we are a bit embarrassed to have missed a final question about a marine animal that made “crop circle” like impressions in the ocean floor near Japan! We feel like this is something we should’ve known (please don’t say all of those hours of watching “Blue Planet II” were for nothing, lol…). Funny, there was a player sitting next to us that did put down “octopus” as an incorrect answer to that question! Turns out this “crop circle” question was a stumper for the whole bar. We still managed to win a second place/$20 gift certificate after wisely wagering low on the final question, and had a respectable 58 points heading into the final. We still remain in a “fairly” comfortable lead at this bar, which we’ve never attempted to conquer. We’ve been kind of enjoying the “just the two of us” trivia nights here on Monday nights, though we have been joined by another player a couple of times! And here are the questions….
Round One
1. Precious Metals – 100 percent pure gold has a fineness of how many karats? Miss for one, talked ourselves out of the right answer…
2. Cartoons – Which mystery-solving cartoon dog has the initials “S.D.” on his collar? 5
3. Africa – Imprisoned by the Apartheid regime for 27 years, who became the first president of Democratic South Africa in 1994? 3
Round Two
1. Coaches – In 1997, what former NBA player became the head coach for the Indiana Pacers, despite having no prior coaching experience? Yes, this was exciting…and I got a “sportsball” question at this bar correct last week, too! Makes up for those two times I put down “Tom Brady” as the incorrect answer for football questions, lol…
2. Misheard Lyrics (Kimberly, this one’s for you…) – “It doesn’t even matter if we’re naked or not” are common misheard lyrics (called a mondegreen) in a rock song by what artist? 5
3. Famous Firsts – In 1903 and in 1911, who was the first person and only woman to win Nobel Prizes in both chemistry and physics? And for an extra three-point bonus, who was the first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court? I had the correct guy written down, but we just weren’t confident enough to risk it if we were wrong. Got the points, not the bonus.
Round Three
1. Phobias (I got all excited about this category…but darn, it wasn’t about coulrophobia) – Photophobia is an acute sensitivity to what? 5
2. U.S. History – who was probably best known for his long flowing signature on the Declaration of Independence – so much so that his name is now a generic word for any signature? 3
3. U.K. – In 1979, who became the first female prime minister of the United Kingdom? 1

Missed #3.
shaniatwain
I want to see her kick Celine Dion’s ass, lol…I looked up her wiki article earlier, she grew up very poor and used to sing at bars – as a child – to earn money for the family. Hard not to like her…dayum, that’s some music street cred right there! Though I’m really not a “country music” person, I will say she deserves some respect!
Halftime Scores – Says Who/Dan Smith, 29; ‘Pods (using the moniker Chef Cthulhu’s Spaghetti Breakfast), 32; Ham Wallets, 33 and One is the Loneliest Number, 36.
Round Four
1. Mountains – Mount Cook is the highest mountain in what country? Newsletter bonus, 6.
2. Inventions – Created in 1945, what implosion-type devide was nicknamed “The Gadget?” Miss for 2.
3. Rivers – The entire western border of Liechtenstein is formed by what European River? A bit of discussion, but we got this for 4 (this was all Mike…woot)!
Round Five
1. Dogs – What was the name of the Labrador retriever belonging to the Clinton family while they lived in the White House? 6
2. Winter Olympics – During the 2018 Winter Olympics, what was the alliterative name of the South Korean Women’s curling team, which took its name from a food item growing in their hometown? Mike came up with a good guess of “Ginseng Girls,” but we missed this for 2. I quizzed a guy named Gordon M., whom I call “Mr. Curling” (traveled with women’s U.S. team to Sochi in 2014 as a coach), and he said he knew the answer to this one…He’s a “Yooper,” a friend of my sister-in-law, and has the distinction of being the very first person to “like” our Facebook page! You always remember your “first,” lol…
3. Presidents – Who was the first president to be inaugurated in Washington, D.C. on March 4, 1801? 4
Round Six
1. Automobiles – Mopar is the parts and customer care division for what automobile company? Miss for 2, though we did consider the right company, d’oh!
2. Google Trends – Who was the most searched for actress in the United Kingdom in 2017, according to Google Trends? We are crappy at figuring out what other people care about, lol…though we were on the right track and picked an American actress (I told Mike that Brits are obsessed with Americans). I know I gotta give up my “girl” card for saying this, but I just don’t care enough about “that” family! And that’s all I’m gonna say about that! Ugh…miss for 4.
3. Flags – What color is the circle in the national flag of Japan? Seriously? 6
Scores – Says Who, 49; Dan Smith, 51; One is the Loneliest Number, 52; Chef Cthulhu’s Spaghetti Breakfast, 58 and Ham Wallets, 63.
Final Category – Animals
Dubbed “crop circles of the sea,” what animal was found to be the cause of seven-foot circular patterns on the ocean floor near Japan in 2011?

This is what the “crop circles” look like…so cool!
We really, really tried on this one, but nope…
Final Scores: Says Who, 22; ‘Pods, 52 and Ham Wallets, 63. Until next time, which will be Wednesday at Arbor Brewing Company (Ypsilanti). As always, Go Pods, and stay classy, Charlie Sheen!
