Trivia Recap – Feb. 22, 2018 – Corner Brewery

The most “watchable” standings in the Sporcle Live trivia universe continue to be at Arbor Brewing Company (Ypsilanti). Last week’s big news was Your Resume Sucks moving into first place and unseating team Ennui, who have regularly been in the top spot at this bar over the past few years. After Wednesday’s game, Ennui is back in the top spot, with Don’t Forget to Strip Your Bartender nipping at their heels, trailing them by just five league points. As for us? Well, we moved from third down to fifth place, thanks mainly to missing and wagering on both final questions – and blowing an ENTIRE progressive mystery round. We’ve been kind of experimenting with a “no zero wagers” rule this season, and since we’re still in the top five, it’s not going THAT badly! We have just five more games to go before the “big dance” (aka the venue tournament) April 4, so that gives us plenty of time to get a new dress and arrange for tuxedo rentals, lol! There were some “interesting” moments during this game, including “triviagasms” for two of our players when we had questions about Mexican food and an audio clue involving a song from 1986, read on to find out more about those exciting moments…and the “oh f— moments as well!”
Game One
1. First Ladies – Three U.S. presidents have been married to women whose given names were Elizabeth. Give the married last name of any of these women. 10
2. World Series – Which MLB team is the most recent to lose the World Series in consecutive years – doing so in 2010 and 2011? Miss for 1.
3. Game Bosses – Lou the Devil, who carries an instrument made from human bones, is the final boss in the third game of what video game series? Miss for 4, though we did pick a game that featured a character with an instrument made from bones…but his name was not “Lou.” Hm, what rhymes with “Lou?” Boo! 🙂
4. Sitcoms – What ABC sitcom airing from 1994 to 1998 featured the characters Spence, Audrey and Paige in addition to the title character? Miss for 2. Not ONE of us ever, ever watched that series, apparently!
5. The Moon – Which phase of the moon immediately follows the waning crescent phase? 9
6. Number One Hits – Name one of the two singers who each had three number one hits on the Billboard Hot 100 charts in 2010 as a lead artist. Name both for an additional point. David with the right answer, but only for 3. Did not get the bonus.
7. Mexican Food – Huevos Divorciados is a dish similar to huevos rancheros except that each of the eggs has a different kind of what? Our Spanish language/Latin American food expert Dave the hero here for 8.
8. City Names – After New York, NY and Philadelphia, PA what is the most populous city in a state that begins with the same letter? 5
9. Movie Sports – In what 1975 film starring James Caan set in 2018 is the title sport the only substitute for any other form of warfare? I want to live in this universe…FB clue, 7. Now I really want to see this movie, too!
10. Children’s Books – In the children’s book “Are You My Mother?” what kind of animal is searching for its mother? We put a more specific animal than the one that was revealed as the answer, so we initially thought we missed it, but Sporcle With Tim gave us the points. Woot!
Mystery – What Country Am I? Only one answer can be submitted, eight points for getting on the first clue, six for the next clue, four for the third clue, two for the last. THESE ROUNDS ARE ALWAYS DEATH! And my team was in a “gambly” mood. MY team…the one with people wanting to push for wagering zero on final questions? SPOILER….we gambled…and lost! Kind of like when you fart and…something else happens as a result? Yeah, you all know what I mean here! Total shart attack! We’re going to need a bigger boat, lol…Are you SURE you want to read on? Are you?
1. I am one of two European countries that currently have a queen with Queen Margarethe II having ascended to the throne in 1972
2. I am both a Scandinavian country and a Nordic Country and I occupy much of the Jutland Peninsula
3. Greenland and the Faroe Islands are part of my kingdom
4. Copenhagen is my capital.
Yup. We THOUGHT we had it on the first guess, but nope! Time to go fetch another beer! 🙂
Twenty-two teams…scores 13 to 62 with the Crotch Crickets in first. We were tied for seventh with one other team with 51 points.
Final Category – Internet Searches
According to Google’s year in Search for 2017, which found search terms with a high spike in traffic compared to 2016, two of the three top “how to” searches were both related to the same topic. Name that topic.
Our question was a harder version of the one asked of some other teams, here’s the easier version:
According to Google’s “Year in Search” for 2017, which found search terms with a high spike in traffic compared to 2016, two of the top three “How to” searches in the U.S. were related to the same event. Name that event.
Nope, we didn’t pick a “hot” enough topic OR event! Time to go down in flames!
Game Two
1. Sports – Of the NBA, NFL, MLB and NHL, which league does not have any teams beginning with “M?” For a nerd bonus point, how many total team names start with that letter? Got this for 6, missed the bonus (narrowly).
2. Universities – Coppin State University and Johns Hopkins University are located in which Eastern U.S. state? 10
3. Charity Songs – Name one of the first four singers on the 1985 charity single “We Are the World,” all of whom had number one hits as solo artist. Why, oh why could this question have been about that “other” charity song instead? Kimberly and I were playing a “name that tune” game in December where we had to name the first singer from the “other” charity single (Do They Know It’s Christmas), which we hit out of the park. Missed this for 3.
4. Shakespeare – Aside from the word “the,” what is the word that appears in the title of more than five Shakespeare plays? 4
5. Princesses – Princess Beautiful, Princess Muscles and Princess Princess are all characters that have appeared on what TV series that debuted on the Cartoon Network in 2010? I believe it’s the first time I’ve ever come across a question about THIS series! Thumbs up, Sporcle!
6. Math Terms – – The Mandlebrot Set is an example of what geometric figure that can be split into parts which are almost a complete copy of the original? I love it when my teammates gush about a question being easy that I don’t know, 8. My time to gush is coming up in just a bit!
7. Songs in Commercials – Audio clue of song used in a commercial, which was a parody of a 1986 single mentioning a “vacation far away.” Obviously I can’t do an audio clue for you here, but we had to name either the artist or the title of the song. Yeah, this was my triviagasm moment for 7.
8. Wildlife – The Breton Wildlife Refuge, which was threatened by an oil spill in the wake of the Deepwater Horizon explosion in 2010, is located in which U.S. state? 5
9. Board Games – First published in 1970, in what Parker Brothers game is the objective to be the player who has acquired the largest fortune in paintings and cash at the end of the game? Its name is a word for an outstanding work of art. Got it.
10. Rom Coms – What 1959 romantic comedy starring Marilyn Monroe and Tony Curtis ends with the line, “Well, nobody’s perfect?”

I ain’t gonna lie. I am kind of a closet fangirl of Marilyn Monroe. To this day, I don’t think any actress could light up the screen the way she did.  She just never figured out how to shake her demons, which would eventually consume her. Actor Jack Lemmon worked with her on the movie from the previous question and said he had nothing but utmost respect for her – despite her being kind of a train wreck on the set (per imdb).
Visual Mystery – https://www.sporcle.com/blog/visual/hero221/ Got all of these.

Scores – Twenty-one teams, scores 36 to 64, with Team #9 in first. We were in fourth with 60 points.
Final Category – Olympic History
An Olympic athlete finished eighth in an individual event in 1984 before returning to win the gold in that same event in each of the next three Winter Olympics. Name that athlete – who was the first American to win the same Winter Olympic event three times.
The question we had differed from the one asked of other teams:
A speed skater finished eighth in the 500m event in 1984, before returning to win the gold medal in that same event in each of the next three Winter Olympics. Name that athlete.
Even if we had the extra “speed skater” clue, unsure if we would have gotten it. Maybe? I would not have remembered the name of this person. Though we did put a skater.
Miss…
That’s it for now! We’ll be doing a game at a “southern former haunt” tonight since we’ll be skipping our Saturday game. Look for our next recap on Friday! As always, Go Pods, and stay classy, Scott Hamilton!
