Trivia Recap – Feb. 13, 2018 – Canton Bistro

We posted our highest-scoring game yet in our “Afternoon Delight” game Monday at the Canton Bistro & Tavern Monday! Kimberly and I have been meeting at this place semi-regularly since this 3 p.m. “Afternoon Delight” trivia game began being offered in mid-December (this is just MY name for the game, it’s not an official name for this particular trivia game). We’ve managed to win a few prizes, angrily shook our fists at some of the questions (we were thinking we’d NEVER get any questions in round five correct for quite the spell) and overall, have enjoyed the little get-togethers. There were a couple of strange occurrences while driving to and from the bar – namely a couple of accidents on the SAME STRETCH OF ROAD! One of them was at Hanford and Canton Center, and held up traffic quite significantly, as emergency/police workers attempted to both guide traffic – and clear the scene. Then heading back on that road, there was another accident along Canton Center, this time just south of Canton Center, though it did not seem to hold up traffic at all. If I were still working as a reporter, I would be asking…”What’s the story here? The roads are clear, not slippery, not covered in ice. Why are people bumping into each other while they’re in their shiny metal boxes? Can’t see cars coming over the snow heaps? Sun getting in their eyes? Spring fever because of the (relatively) warmer weather?” Needless to say, that made me a bit nervous on my drive back to Ypsilanti! Kind of made me glad I don’t generally partake of alcohol at these afternoon games. As for some of the other patrons – particularly the ones in the bar area? They don’t sound like they’re holding back – conversationally, or with the booze! Their turning the “barside” area into a little party zone…(such early birdies)! I’m more of a “night drinker,” myself, but hey, to each their own! I’m not judging them! I was, however, kind of thinking some “stabby” thoughts about them when they had difficulty hearing the questions over their loud conversations and asked for them repeatedly to be repeated…Getting into any kind of bar mischief with drunken, 50-something white trash women is not something I feel like doing when I’m just trying to do a little trivia getaway! We did not win any prizes in this game, but finished with a respectable 64 points heading into the final. And the questions…
Round One
1. Mythology – In Greek mythology, what character was known for turning everything into gold? Thankfully, we did not need any of our teammates for this, as for the next question? Read on! 5
2. Games – What is the highest number found on a traditional bingo card? We would have needed Mike for this, he used to work in a casino bingo hall…miss for 1 (though Kim made a nice effort).
3. TV – What was the name of the character played by Herve Villechaize on “Fantasy Island?” Funny, I just watched a movie featuring one of his co-stars Ricardo Montalban on Sunday afternoon. Sad story about Villechaize, though he wound up killing himself in 1993. I was telling Kim that he was one of a couple of “little people” actors who died in this fashion, the other being David Rappaport. Sorry guys, I’ll try to keep things more upbeat! 🙂 Celebrity deaths is just one of my obsessions…
Round Two
1. Music – What is the first word of the Queen song “Bohemian Rhapsody?” 5
2. Web Sites – What web site, which started out selling primarily books, debuted in 1994 and was called “Cadabra?” 3
3. Medicine – What letter of the alphabet identifies helpers and killers of white blood cells in the human immune system? For an extra three-point bonus, what infectious disease were dairy maids seemingly immune to – which helped Edward Jenner create the first vaccine for this disease? This question is re-written…we talked about the right answer, but picked another (hey…we ain’t the “scientists” on our trivia team…).
Round Three
1. Landmarks – In what state is “Old Faithful” located? I knew Yellowstone was spread out over three states, and debated between the two larger ones, thankfully wound up picking the right one, 3.
2. Cycling – How many of the 23 days of the Tour de France are spent doing actual cycling? Miss for 1.
3. Space – Within one, when is Halley’s Comet scheduled to next arrive? We missed a question about this in a trivia game a few weeks ago, where I was off by 2 – we managed to get this correct within 1 for 5, yay!
Halftime – Identify the actresses in which the following young actresses appeared.
1. Kate, Mermaids.
2. Velvet, International Velvet.
3. Gertie, E.T.
4. Iris, Taxi Driver.
Aced this whole round. Kinda makes up for that miss from the finals last weekend involving “The Fly” (groan).

This is girl #1 from the 1998 film Pecker.
We were in first out of six teams with 34 points at the half.
Round Four
1. First Ladies – Which US President’s wife was the youngest first lady, marrying the 49 year-old President when she was just 21 years old? Newsletter clue, 6.
2. TV – Burt Reynolds starred as a football coach in what 1990s TV series? I never watched this series but thankfully I at least knew it existed so we could get this for 4.
3. Comic Books – What comic book character had a pet dog named Dollar? 2
Round Five
1. Children’s Books – In a 1963 book, a character named Emily Elizabeth receives what animal – the runt of its litter – for her birthday? Easy 6 points.
2. Geography – What country is bordered by Poland to the north, Germany to the west, Austria to the south, and Slovakia to the east? This is a question that Mike and Brad would easily handle…turns out I did just fine without ’em! Got this for 4.
3. Shakespeare – In what Shakespeare work would you find characters named Oberon and Titania? This is abbreviated, got for 2.
Round Six
1. Music – What time of day is mentioned in the name of a song used as the “theme” song for the Count Basie Orchestra? Nope, miss for 2.
2. Sports – What player was named MVP of the first two Super Bowls? I knew what team the guy probably played for, since I figured the winning team would be the team with the MVP. Too bad I couldn’t name any players from that team (though I can name the winning team’s coach). Nope, miss for 4.
3. Alcohol – What liquor made from sugar cane is typically used in a pina colada? 6
Scores: We were in second with 64 points heading into the final behind California Kelley, who had 65 points.
Final Category – U.S. History
Which of the original 13 colonies did not attend the Constitutional Convention and was last to ratify the Constitution?
A lot of discussion…but nope.
Well, that’s it for that game! California Kelley took first, Way Past Our Bedtime took a prize…did not write it all down. See y’all in the next recap on Thursday afternoon!
