We’ve been trying a “don’t sweat the small stuff” approach to trivia this season. Not every weekly battle will be fantastic, and sometimes the final questions will be about a 1941 advertisement that for the life of you, you just can’t recall, let alone make a decent guess about! 🙂 Also, the prizes may sometimes go to other teams besides yours (oh the humanity). Good news, we managed to gain some ground in terms of points in Monday’s My Trivia Live game at Powell’s Pub, which is a place we’re attempting to win as a possible semifinal spot down the road. There are a couple of sizable teams playing there every week, one “usually” going by the name Dan Smith, and the other using the name Ham Wallets. There are also some barhop teams typically in the mix, one of which – Says Who – was the first place finisher, winning a $30 gift certificate. We still finished just one point out of Says Who’s top spot. We’re definitely players in this game! Speaking of the game…
Round One
1. Advertising – Which insurance company uses a duck as their mascot? 5
2 Candy – What kind of nut is traditionally found in turtles candy? 3
3. Track and Field – How many throwing events are there in a decathlon? 1
Round Two
1. Astrology – What is the only month starting with the same letter as the zodiac sign falling during that month? 5
2. T.V. – What reality show debuted in 1992 and is still on the air – having aired more than 600 episodes? 3
3. Dates – What will be the first year after 1961 that will appear the same upside down as right side up, when written? Mike asked for a bit of clarification on this, since one of the years it could be has already passed, got this for 2. Bonus for three extra points – Super Bowl #55 will be held in what year? Got both parts correct, thanks George for making this clear!
Round Three
1. Musicians – The bassist and keyboard player for Led Zeppelin adopted what stage name that was also the name of what Revolutionary War hero? Mike is a big fan of this group…but this answer was all me (tsk, tsk….)! Now to see if this guy is dead…or alive (a trivia player’s brain never rests, lol)! Yup, he’s alive! Which member of this band ISN’T alive? Ah, y’all know the answer to that one, right? OK, within five, how many shots of vodka did he drink the night he died by inhaling his own vomit? 5 points.
2. Advertising – What company’s slogan was, “You can trust your car to the man who wears a star?” Mike and John teamed up with success here for 3.
3. Inventions – Dallas’ Love Field was the first to have what in its terminal in 1955? Educated guess for 1.
Halftime – Name the Oscar-winning actors who narrated the following films:
1. AI, 2001
2. How the Grinch Stole Christmas, 2000
3. Stand By Me, 1987
4. War of the Worlds, 2005

Sexbots from AI.
Mike and I came up with 3 and 4 right away. And we put in a guess of the guy who played a sexbot in #1 (photo tie in, as I said, I will “try” to make the recap photos for this month kind of racy since it is “sweeps” month, lol). We missed #1 and #2. Turns out sexbot guy was only nominated for a couple of Oscars, but hasn’t won any.
Scores – Eight teams, scores 16 to 34, with us in first.
Round Four
1. Oklahoma! Because there were too many oil wells in Oklahoma for the exterior scenes, the musical Oklahoma! was filmed in which state? Newsletter clue, 6.
2. TV Theme Songs – Released in 1955, the theme song for what five-part TV miniseries hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts? Though I don’t remember this happening since I wasn’t born yet, I do remember having read about this (was it a Cracked article)? I don’t remember where I read it…4.
3. Cars – What Chevy car model lost 90 percent of its sales after Ralph Nader published his book, “Unsafe at Any Speed,” which was about this car? 2. You still see these cars at cruise nights in the summer.
Round Five
1. Time – What is one of two U.S. states that do not observe Daylight Savings Time? Miss for 2.
2. Presidents – What is the only U.S. president to have the midle initial “K?” 6
3. Aliases – Because of a 1994 incident for which he is known, what man legally changed his name to Jeff Stone? We didn’t think this year was the year that “this” happened, so we missed this for 4.
Round Six
1. Music – Only one song by the Beatles, “Til There Was You,” was ever used in a Broadway musical. What was that musical? No teams got this one. Miss for 2.
2. Food – Gerber and DiGiorno are part of what Swiss company? Miss for 4.
3. Activities – What activity gets its name from the word for creating fabric from yarn using a small hook? 6
Finished regular rounds with 58 points.
Scores – Nine teams, scores 33 to 59, with Says Who in first. We were right behind them with 58 points.
On the first TV advertisement, broadcast in 1941, what product, for which the company paid $4 for the airtime, was the first product advertised?
No idea. We wagered zero.
All three top finishers wound up knowing this one…
Emmet Street, 72; Ham Wallets, 104, Says Who, 117.
Shrugs. Can’t win ’em all! Our next MTL game will be our finals game Saturday at the Library Bar in Novi. Our next trivia game will be our Sporcle Live game Wednesday at Arbor Brewing Company (Ypsilanti). As always, Go Pods, and stay classy, Antonio López de Santa Anna!
