Trivia Recap – Feb. 4, 2018 – Oscar’s Sports and Grill

Our team’s “dynamic duo” visited Oscar’s Sports & Grill Saturday for its Sporcle Live scene. We weren’t quite so “dynamic” in game one, with questions about video games, albums and novels bitch slapping us pretty good! We had not originally planned to go out for trivia that night since we had a trivia tournament earlier that day, but…and I know none of you are going to believe this – but Mike actually wanted to go out for this game! I know, I couldn’t believe it either! “Oh, all right, honey…twist my arm…” We finished in second for the night with 122 points, had to wager zero on the game one sportsball final (I really, really hate wagering zero on finals these days…), but managed to be one of only a couple of teams knowing the final answer in game two, which meant we won a $15/first place gift card.
Game One
1. Albums – What British group was the only one to be nominated for the Grammy for album of the year for five consecutive years? Miss for 5.
2. Volleyball – Name one of the two nations who have won the most medals in beach volleyball since it was introduced as a sport in the 1996 Summer Olympics. Yay! For only…two points. And since February is “sweeps” month, I may be using some racy photos with game recaps as a lame attempt to get more readers!

Since this photo may be a hint at the correct answer from above, then just go ahead and name the other nation, too! Hopefully the photo doesn’t distract you from thinking too much 🙂
3. Actors – Toby Regbo, Richard Harris, and Michael Gambon have all played what character in the Harry Potter series? Flashback, we had a difficult question in a MTL finals in March, 2017 where we had to come up with the second actor’s name, which we managed to do with not much time to spare! Got this for 10.
4. Accidents – Within two, in what year did Dick Cheney shoot a guy in the face while quail hunting? Bonus for getting exact, which we almost did (my bad…sorry Mike)! Still got the points for 4.
5. Novels – Sally Kimball served as bodyguard for what title detective book character? There was more to this question that I did not write all down. But this girl sounds kind of like a bad-ass! Why did I not read these books when I was a kid? 🙂 Miss for 3.
6. Slogans – Louisville, Portland, and Indianapolis have all adopted slogans capitalizing on their weirdness, which are all inspired by what southern capital city’s slogan? Mike said he was walking out of a bar on Wednesday, and overheard a woman complaining about the TV series “Portlandia.” She whined, “I don’t like that show making fun of my lifestyle.” Not making this up! He said she made that comment more than once…he bit his tongue and didn’t say anything!
7. SCIENCE! And Math – What is the sum total of the numbers indicating the both the freezing points and boiling points in Celsius and in Fahrenheit? 9
8. Actresses – Audio clip of Will Ferrell, playing James Lipton, and Kate Upton, had to ID what actress Upton was portraying, got this for just 1.
9. Mountains – Liechtenstein is located primarily in what mountain range? 8
10. Video Games – What video game series has included installments including “Double Dash” and “Super Circuit?” Miss for 7.
Mystery – One-Word Hits – Given the artist and the release year, name the songs that hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts.
1. 1975 – Barry Manilow
2. 1982 – The Steve Miller Band
3. 2006 – Beyonce
4. 1999 – Cher
Missed #3.
Scores: 13 teams, scores 21 to 64, with One is the Loneliest Number in first. We were in fourth with 49.
Final Category – Football Players
No choice. We had to do the unthinkable – and wager zero. Desperation is a stinky cologne…ugh!
Since 1979, in addition to Reggie Bush, there have been four football players that have won both a Heisman Trophy and a Super Bowl. Name two of those four players.
We put in a guess anyway, even though we wagered nothing.
Whitmore Lake Wizards and One is the Loneliest Number were in a first place tiebreaker and had to answer how many Encyclopedia Brown books in total were published. One was closest and took first, Whitmore Lake Wizards took second.
Game Two
1. Fouls – In what sport can players commit a loose ball foul? This question was thrown out after someone in the peanut gallery blurted out the answer (that is becoming kind of a regular occurrence with this trivia spot). I don’t think Sporcle Live with Liz can request that this NOT happen enough! If she pulled out her hair every time this happened, she’d be nearly bald by now! Is someone doing this on purpose? So…we had this question instead…
1. Sports Records – In what year did Hank Aaron surpass Babe Ruth’s home runs record in MLB? If this would have been a “within how many years…” question instead of having to get the year exact, we may have gotten it! My guess was really, really close, and all because of …Peanuts! Yes, I know a few random sports facts because of all the “Peanuts” comics/books I read as a kid – and some of them have helped us get questions correct in games, believe it or not!

Snoopy gets some hate mail for trying to beat Babe Ruth’s record.
2. Board Games – Gloppy, Plumpy and Jolly are all monsters in what board game’s 1949 edition? 10
3. Sharks – Mike, the amateur marine biologist that he is, was very excited when we got this as a category! But when we heard the actual question, he was…not quite so excited!
Sharks – Mark Cuban and Lori Greiner joined the cast of “Shark Tank” in seasons three and four respectively. Give the first names of two of the four people who have served as sharks for all seasons of “Shark Tank” so far. The only episode of the show we ever watched was one where someone tried to sell their beard potion, and said that they lived the “bearded lifestyle.” Which apparently meant that he quit his lucrative job – the same time his wife was having their first child –  so that he could chase this white whale…or shark? We just watched that episode for S&Gs. His beard tonic proposal was turned down, for the record…Miss for 1.

This was the guy who tried getting Shark Tank to invest in his beard potions.
4. Nicknames – If a person crosses the border from the Beehive State to the Grand Canyon State, in which cardinal direction are they traveling? Got this, thanks partially to a state borders visual round I failed in Tuesday’s game, got this for 9.
5. Cooking – What color is used to describe a steak that is cooked to less than rare? 8
6. Famous Names – Thomas Edward is the first and middle name of what man, born in 1888, who was an archaelogist and member of the British Army and Air Force? FB clue, 7
7. Universities – In which south central state is Oral Roberts University located? Miss for 3.
8. Coaches – What actor played the title character in the movie “Coach Carter?” Yay, a coaches question that is actually a movies question in disguise, kind of makes up that whole “sharks” debacle from a few questions back!
9. Comic Strips – What was the first name of the character who married Blondie Boopadoop?
10. Grammy Winners – What artist was the winner of Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Record of the Year, and best R&B song at the 2018 Grammy Awards? Someone give me a scratch and sniff sticker, dammit! I actually made the effort to pay attention to the Grammy winners this year, though I didn’t watch (I’m not a fan of award ceremonies). I WROTE DOWN this year’s Grammy winners! I’m old school that way, writing things down helps me remember. We got this for 4.
Visual Mystery –
visual2418
Got all of these.
Scores – Eight teams, scores 20 to 57, with us in first.
Final Category- TV Resumes
Sarah Michelle Gellar has been credited in at least 14 episodes of six different TV series, including Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Name any one of the other five series.
Thankfully I remembered one of her older series, since I brainfarted on that one she was in with Robin Williams not too long ago.
Final Scores – ‘Pods, 73 Let’s Get It, 68.
Until next time, which will be Monday. The “afternoon delight” game Monday is TBD at this time, that will depend upon how I’m feeling…and the weather. But we will play our Monday evening game at Powell’s Pub for sure. As always, Go Pods, and stay classy, Kendall Hart!
