What’s the Buzz? Tell Me What’s Happening!

So I’m hearing rumors that one of the trivia leagues I’ve played in for a couple of years is kind of changing things up a bit. And for a team like mine – those changes might not be for the better! Especially if they are on the eve of a tournament!

Just to explain things a bit, me and my team plays in two trivia leagues – Sporcle Live (which hosts shows in several U.S. states) – and Michigan-based My Trivia Live. Though both leagues are kind of similar in their formats, there are some key differences:

Sporcle Live: Questions tend to favor players age 18-35

My Trivia Live: Questions tend to favor players ages 40 and older

It seems MTL is throwing a monkey wrench into things as of late. They have apparently hired new question writers, and now they are asking about “younger” topics. The latest Fallout Boy album. The name of the “America’s Got Talent” singer who performed at Trump’s inauguration. The name of the female comedian who will become the new spokesperson for Groupon.  The name of the vibrating Playstation controller (sounds hella kinky to me, lol). They even asked about a Notorious B.I.G. song on Monday!

So, in essence, the two leagues might just becomes clones of each other as a result. If that happens? What would be the point of me trying to vie for supremacy in both leagues?

With the exception of one “younger” player I have as a “loaner” from another team, my team is on the “younger side of old,” in MTL, and… a bit older for Sporcle! Three of us are in our mid ’40s – I have two 50-plus year old players, and a 42-year-old (he prefers the Sporcle Live league, and a couple of others on my team prefer MTL).

Though my team does fairly well in both leagues, we’ve done a bit better in the MTL league, and always manage to place in the top 10 every time we go to finals, and won first in July, 2017! In the Sporcle Live league, we’re not quite as stellar! Though we win prizes during the season fairly often – and almost always manage to qualify for finals, we haven’t won any cash tournament prizes since 2016 (and that was only because I replaced my entire team with “stunt doubles” since my team was not available to play that day). And before that…it was 2013!

I guess I’ll have to see how things go with the upcoming MTL semifinals. I already have my roster set, and it does NOT include any millennials! I have two 50-somethings, and two 40-somethings. I’ll take a look at the way the wind blows for the remainder of the MTL season, which runs until mid May.  At that point? I may decide to do some slimming down and pick only one trivia league! I’ll let my players help determine that answer…
