Kimberly and I visited the Canton Bistro & Tavern Monday for its My Trivia Live scene, which I’m jokingly calling the “Afternoon Delight” game. “Afternoon Delight,” as any music lover knows, is a 1976 track by the Starland Vocal Band. And it’s about sex. And it was my absolute favorite song when I was about 5. My parents didn’t think anything of their 5-year-old daughter listening to people sing (in delightful harmonies) about afternoon quickies. Don’t hate on them – it was a different time! Bear with me, I’m on kind of a kindergarten flashback right now for some reason! We had some bright spots in the game – such as getting all of the halftime questions correct – and getting the bonus question correct – but trivia glory was just not be on this day! Kimberly’s Sparty On team will be playing in the MTL semifinals at this bar on Saturday, Feb. 3 in the hopes of winning a finals spot. Let’s hope their maiden voyage in this league is successful! And as I stress again…”This is not a ‘Pods joint!” We had 46 points going into the final question, did not manage to win any prizes. And the questions…
Round One
1. SCIENCE! – What is the step in the scientific process where one makes an educated guess? 5
2. Game Shows – (speaking of educated guesses…) Hosts Chris Harrison and Cedric the Entertainer have both served as hosts of what game show, which debuted in 1999? Got it, but not confident, 1.
3. E-Mail – Once known as Hotmail, the name of MSN’s server’s changed its name to what in 2013? Kim with right guess here for 3.
Round Two
1. NBA – Microsoft executive Steve Balmer bought what NBA team for $2 billion in 2014? We were in right part of the country..and damn it all, if that’s not the team that I always forget when brainstorming teams from this state!
2. Networks – Spike TV changed its name in 2018 to reflect the name of the movie studio that owns it? Good guess for 3.
3. Inaugurations – In addition to Toby Keith and Three Doors Down, what singer and finalist from “America’s Got Talent” performed at Donald Trump’s inauguration in 2017? Kim worked really hard on this part of the question, while I easily answered the bonus…What U.S. president had the longest inaugural address in history? There was more to this question, but I didn’t write it all down. Thankfully Kim managed to come up with part one, so we got this for 3 plus the bonus.
Round Three
1. Security – What home entertainment service offers a service called “Digital Wipe?” Miss for 1.
2. Words – What word, beginning with “M,” means “universe as a whole” or describes the total or entire complex structure of something? Kim was on the right track and had the second part of this word, but nope, miss.
3 Books – What is the name for the collectible series of books by Barnes & Noble featuring reprints of famed authors’ books in leather binding with ribbon bookmarks? Nope, miss.
Halftime – Name four of the five animals mentioned in the Rodgers & Hammerstein Song “My Favorite Things.” I went on a little rant about this song recently. It implies that when bad things happen to you, just think of good things and then you won’t feel so bad. Since when does THAT ever work?
A bit of work…but we got all of these. Yay, 10 points!
Scores: Seven teams, scores 14 to 33, with Barside in first. We were in third with 30, playing under the moniker Whore Island Convention and Visitor’s Bureau.
Round Four
1. Diamonds – Because of its large diamond district, what European city is known as the diamond capital of the world? Newsletter answer, 6.
2. Late Actors – Omarosa Manigault was romantically involved with what Academy Award nominated actor at the time of his death in 2012? Knew who it wasn’t, and went with a guess of someone who died too recently (though we knew he was wrong). Miss.
3. Acronyms – What does DACA stand for? We had this question in a game before, and another player knew the answer for it. Too bad this player wasn’t at this game, since I missed it! And by this time, Kim had left, so I was “trying” to hold things down on my own! Miss.
Round Five
1. Mo – “Mo Money, Mo Problems” by Notorious B.I.G. features a sample of what Diana Ross song? My knowledge of her songs is very limited, and my knowledge of Notorious B.I.G.’s songs is even more limited! Even if at gunpoint, my brain wasn’t gonna come up with this one! I put down the theme song for a movie that Diana Ross had appeared in. Hey…one day, maybe THAT movie/song will be the correct answer to a trivia question, and I’ll be like…yay!

Diana Ross in “Mahogany.” To be honest, I was never really a Diana Ross fan…and an image like this doesn’t make me want to change my mind!
2. In The News – In what country would you find “Suicide Forest,” where YouTube celebrity Logan Paul recently showed footage of a suicide victim? Good news is I picked a country. Just not the right one. Miss.
3. Candy – In January, 2018, Nestle brokered a deal to sell its U.S. confectionary business to what candy company based in Italy? Nope, total goose egg for this round! I don’t think I’ve ever gotten a round five question right at this bar! Curse?
Round Six
1. Video Games (dear Cthulhu, no! Don’t you think I’ve been punished enough already?) – What is the name given to a Playstation controller referring to the vibration activated by the games played with it? Miss.
2. Geography – What African capital city is spelled just like the country in which it is located, except without the last two letters of its name? Yay, a correct answer!
3. Hulu – The upcoming Hulu series “Castle Rock” is based on books by what American author? Yay, another correct one!
Scores – Seven teams, scores 32 to 66, with Way Past My Bedtime (Two Sporcle hosts) in first. I was in fourth.
Final Category – Labor
When Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in April, 1968, he was in Memphis to aid a labor strike involving what industry? Nope, wagered and missed.
Final Standings: One is the Loneliest Number, 90 (moved up from fifth); Canton Chiefs, 100 and Barside, 118.
