Trivia Recap – Jan. 13, 2018 – Oscar’s Sports and Grill

Well…not TOO bad! Three of us hit up the Sporcle Live scene at Oscar’s Grill in Saline Saturday, finished in second overall for the night and won a $15 first place gift card in game one. Special thanks to Oscar’s owner – whom as you might guess, is named Oscar – for buying us a pitcher of beer! I’m not sure what we did to warrant this generous gesture, but, uh…thanks? I guess there’s a first time for everything? I hear he asked the trivia host Liz H. whom we were – “Where are the cephalopods, he asked?” Our player Evan had a “triviagasm” (getting super excited about knowing the answer in a trivia game) when he knew the final answer for game one – but it’s still not as good as when he had that triviagasm for knowing a final answer about Michael Peña a few months ago! I’ll get to that question and others in a bit…in the meantime, I need to study up on First Ladies (ahem)…
Game One
1. Geography Words – In geography terms, what is the opposite of occident? Some team put down “Antioxidant,” lol…10.
2. Host Countries – How many different African countries have played host to the Men’s FIFA World Cup? One of two soccer related questions we had this night…yay a sports area I kind of know a bit about (though I am not an expert in soccer…that distinction goes to our friend and occasional teammate Archie C.). God the World Cup is this year and I’m not sure how tuned I’ll be since the U.S. is not in it.  Fair weather friend? Meh, I’ll still watch it! I’ll probably root for Spain or Germany (anyone but Brazil) – though I guess I SHOULD root for another CONCACAF team. Who cares? Just another excuse to drink beer and watch sportsball featuring cute guys in shorts! 🙂 9
3. Mario – (before we had question, Evan said, “Don’t worry, guys, I’ve got this one) What is the name of the most recent Mario game released in October, 2017 for Nintendo Switch? 6
4. Smash Hits – Audio clue of Smashmouth song, had to identify the three words that were muted, got this for 8.
5. Famous Planes – The Spirit of St. Louis, which was Charles Lindbergh’s plane, was custom built by Ryan NYP. What do the letters NYP stand for? Lots of teams missed this, I thought of correct answer after we handed in our slip (d’oh)!
6. Game Shows – In the original version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, name either of the guaranteed prize amounts won after getting 5 or 10 questions correct. Both for nerd bonus. Evan was all over this, said he used to watch it with his parents. I said I knew more about the fashions inspired by that show than the show itself…I was working in a store that sold Regis Philbin ties. Those solid color ties were all the rage in 2000!

Yes, this was THE look around 2000…even my husband jumped in on the craze with the outfit he wore to my 10-year class reunion (which he will kill me if I post so I will not)!

7. Medical Conditions – The medical term dysphagia means having a difficulty doing what? I think all the teams missed this one…
8. Companies – In what European country was the Phillips Corporation founded – Denmark, France, Hungary or Netherlands? Mike with right guess…(we did not use our D4)!
9. Acting Pairs – What acting pair appeared in the movies “The Devil’s Advocate” and “Sweet November?”
10. Soup – What Vietnamese soup is made of broth, noodles, herbs and meat? I made right guess here…
Mystery – Before and After – One of the clues will be about literature – the other will be about an athlete.
1. 1943 novella by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry with a royal title character and six-time MLB all-star who played with the Brewers, the Tigers and the Rangers
2. 1840s Alexandre Dumas novel about a wrongfully imprisoned man and the first person inducted into the Skateboarding Hall of Fame
3. 1897 vampire novel and San Diego Chargers running back who won the MVP award in 2006
4. Lewis Carroll fantasy novel and a seven-time Honda Award winner for the U.S.Men’s soccer team (soccer question #2 for the night).
Got all of these…pure teamwork! Though #2 caused us to hiccup a little bit…
Scores – Seventeen teams, scores 18 to 63, with us in first.
Final Category – Long-running TV
What is the longest-running live-action sitcom currently in production that premiered in the decade of the 2000s? The first episode aired in August 2005.
Evan gets this one right away…

horriblebosses

This whiny-voiced actor is in the correct TV series….

Final scores ??? 63; ‘Pods, 77.
Game Two
1. Countries – South Sudan is the youngest country to become a member of the United Nations. Within five, in what year did South Sudan gain its independence from Sudan? Got this for 5.
2. Number One Songs -What Billboard Hot 100 song had these lyrics: “We’ve come too far to give up who we are/So let’s raise the bar and our cups to the stars?” Evan tried hard here…but nope, miss for 1.
3. Typing – What does the = sign share a key with on a standard QWERTY keyboard? 10
4. Heat – Through which method of heat transfer does a furnace distribute heat? Convection, conduction, or radiation? Mike for the points…
5. Stores – I really did not write this one down. But it’s about Harry Potter. We got it. If someone else played and posts a recap with this question, I’ll edit the post later.
6. U.S. Cities – West Valley City, West Jordan and Ogden are among the most populous cities in what U.S. state? We misunderstood this question to mean “the most populous cities,” not AMONG the most populous cities…so our bad here! Miss for 3.
7. Movie Stars – Name one of the three highest-grossing movies featuring Pierce Brosnan at the U.S. box office. Name both for an extra bonus point. Nope and nope! This was rough…he only starred in one of these.
8. Board Games – What room comes last alphabetically in a game of Clue? Before our game, Evan started writing down names of all of the rooms in Clue, thinking this question would be about this. So, so glad he did this…got this. This was a FB clue that actually required a bit of thought!
9. Military on TV – In what armed services branch did Tony Nelson serve on “I Dream of Jeannie?” And Mike nails a ’60s era TV question for the second time in as many days, lol…
10. Tennis Stars – What Yugoslavian born tennis star ranked #1 in the world in 1993 was stabbed in the back by a fan of Steffi Graf? Considered right person, but missed this for 2.
Visual Mystery –

visual113
Got all of these. But not hearing that key word in that populations question wound up hurting us! Especially since we considered the answer that was correct, but ruled it out because another city was far more populous than all of these in that state. Oh well…these things happen! Moving on…
Scores – Seventeen teams, scores 17 to 63, with One is the Loneliest Number in first. We were in fifth with 50.
Final Category – Money
Only two women have ever appeared on officially issued U.S. paper currency. The 1st appeared on the reverse side of a 20-dollar bill in 1865 and the 2nd appeared in portrait on a one-dollar silver certificate first issued in 1886. Name either.
Considered one of the right answers, but not seriously enough to write it down…miss.
Final Standings: ???, 66; One is the Loneliest Number, 83.
Until next time…which will be Monday at Powell’s Pub for the first My Trivia Live game of the season. Look for a game recap next Tuesday. As always, Go Pods, and stay classy, the Blair Witch!
