I’m very, very happy that three “league” teams I know pretty well showed up at our Sporcle Live venue tournament Saturday at Oscar’s in Saline! Team Sparty On featuring my “trivia buddy” (and name that tune cohort) Kimberly and her husband Brent showed up for the rumble – and the other two league teams that qualified at Oscar’s during the past season came out to play – a “soloist” and longtime rival from More Beer Less Pants and another soloist from the aptly named team One is the Loneliest Number. I’ve immensely enjoyed testing my trivia mettle against both of these “soloists” over the past few years! Sure, my team was pretty much assured of getting our tournament spot Saturday since the previous two teams I mentioned already locked in their spots earlier in the week or earned their spot via barhop – but the fact they showed up made it all worthwhile! Why? Because to me, trivia contests are not that much different from chess competitions! Would Bobby Fischer want to play a chess game if his opponent didn’t show up? Would Bobby Fischer waste his time playing against anyone other than a worthy adversary? I wonder what Bobby Fischer thought about “Chess,” the Abba-guys composed musical about him? How good of a singer was he? I digress!

Bobby Fischer battles Boris Spassky in Iceland in 1972. And how cool is the title “Grandmaster?” Super smart guys battling it out in cutthroat competition draped by the Iron Curtain…I can’t EVEN! 🙂
The “Abba guys” are Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson, if you must know, the lyrics were composed by Tim Rice. You’ll thank me later if you get a trivia question about this (you’re welcome)! All that said, having some real “worthy adversaries” in the room with us – all with nothing on the line (except maybe to kick our asses and win some beer money) – meant the world to me! I would have been very disappointed had these three teams not shown up (I love you guys).

Stay tuned, I’ll have a full recap of that game posted soon!
