Trivia Recap – Sept. 12, 2017 – Powell’s Pub

It was almost three years ago that we decided to hit up the My Trivia Livescene at Powell’s Pub for the first time. We’d never played a MTL game before, and were looking for another bar to check out on Monday nights. Plus, one of our rival teams, More Beer Less Pants, talked about playing here, so we thought we’d check it out! Turns out it was a “bye” week when we “invaded” this place in October, 2014, so some regular teams, including MBLP were not in attendance. We did meet another regular “team” there – Michael B. who plays solo under the name “One is the Loneliest Number.” He’s that guy who is out doing trivia battle pretty much EVERY night! And you thought I was a junkie! 🙂 He and I wound up quizzing each other about movie trivia in between answering questions during the game. And he and I still quiz each other during the games! We would not play another MTL game until February, 2016, when what was initially supposed to be a “girls night out” at a Canton trivia spot/watering hole turned out to be a trivia night at The Wurst Bar. Starting then, it became a weekly “just girls” gig. A few months later, the rest of the ‘Pods team would join in on the fun, and we qualified for our first MTL semifinal game. We did not advance to the finals in that game, but have advanced to a couple of MTL finals since then! The “girls nights” of trivia haven’t gone away – they’ve just become more sporadic and have become relegated to primarily the summer months because a couple of the “girls” are teachers! Kimberly and I still kill it in “name that tune” and “Face the Music” nights, recently winning a $20 gift certificate at the ROC bar in Plymouth! We team up well because she’s good with the R&B/modern music/boy bands, and I’m a British rock/alt rock/new wave/disco/70s music aficionado! I’ll never forget it when she asked me who “The Smiths” were!
So Monday Mike and I hit up the Powell’s trivia scene, finished in third after winning a tiebreaker question that seemed to confuse everyone in the bar – and thankfully confused the two parties involved in the tiebreaker in exactly the same way! Read more about that in a bit, but here are the rest of the questions…
Round One
1. Human Anatomy – What would you have a cast put on if you broke your ulna? 5
2. Vegetables – As its name implies, “rabbage” is a hybrid of what root vegetable and what leafy vegetable? 3
3. Fairy Tales – What fairy tale features the line, “The better to eat you with?” Photo tie in, Looney Tunes short featuring a very obnoxious “LIttle Red Riding Hood!” Got all of these correct.
Round Two
1. Current TV – A reboot of what 1970s police drama will begin its 8th season starting Monday, Sept 25? Mike with correct guess here, this turned out to be his trivia night for sure! I could have stayed home! 5
2. Donations – People that have what blood type are considered universal donors? OK, he needed me for this one, 5.
3. Nobel Prizes – Which former U.S president won a Nobel Peace Prize in 2002, which was thought to be a response to the the war on Iraq? For an extra three point bonus, what international organization won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1917 for its work in World War I, in 1944 for its work in World War 2 and in 1963 for its 100th anniversary? Got this for 1 plus the three points.
Round Three
1. U.S. Cities – What U.S. city is known as the “Glass Capital of the World?” 5
2. Statues – Which Washington D.C. building has been topped by the Statue of Freedom since 1863? And this was the second time during the game that this year was mentioned in a question…reasoned guess for 3.
3. U.S. States – Which U.S. state has the lowest population density with 1.3 people per square mile? Easy way to finish the round.
Halftime – Given the vanity license plates and release years, identify the movies depicted.
1. Gen II, 1968
2. 1984, ECTO 1
3. OUTA TIME, 1985
4. ALMITY-1, 2003
Missed #1, though we had the right year for the movie we were thinking of. Sorry, Dave, I’m afraid we didn’t get that answer right. And would you open the pod bay doors already, Hal! Can you guess the movie we put down? 🙂
Scores: Six teams, 24 points to 40, with Team Lester in first. We were second with 36 points playing under the moniker Zach, Miri and Cthulhu make a tenacle porno.
Round Four
1. Geography – What country is almost completely surrounded by Senegal? Mike and I like to make nerdy geography jokes. Yes, we’re nerdy that way, so sue us! Sometimes they wind up helping me get final questions right, like “Moldova” from last Thursday, when we joked about a person in between people in a crowded booth being team crammed into a booth being “landlocked like Moldova.” And Moldova was one of the final answers in my trivia game last Thursday! We also joke about the country in this question, dubbing it the “No river for you” country. Those poor, poor Senegalese! “But our buckets are dry. Can’t we fill them from your river?” Gambia: “No river for you!” Those “river Nazis,” LOL! And of course I’m referring to the “Soup Nazi”on “Seinfeld,” not those Charlottesville assholes!
2. Golf – What is the oldest of the four major golf tournaments? Mike with the right answer here (see, I told you he was on fire), 2.
3. Fictional Characters – “The Case of the Velvet Case” from a 1914 book was about what fictional character? Our first flub of the night for 4 (besides the halftime round).
Round Five
1. During Dinner – Where is the butter plate placed in a standard table setting, per Emily Post? Nope, miss for 2. Curse the team “Ungrateful Dan” for picking this as the “you pick,” LOL!
2. Fossils – What fossilizes to form copralite? Mike really knew his “shit” Monday night! 💩 Got this for 6.
3. Baseball Cards – Dubbed “T206” and famously owned by Wayne Gretzky, who is depicted on what is dubbed the most valuable baseball card of all time? Wonder if Brad would’ve known this…we missed for 4.
Round Six
1. Song Lyrics – What type of forest is mentioned in the first verse of Woody Guthrie’s “This Land is Your Land?” 6
2. Wars – Also known as the “Seven Years War,” what two nations fought in the French and Indian War? 4
3. Insects – What part of the firefly flashes when it glows? 2
Finished with a respectable 62 points tied for third with Ungrateful Dan. Team Lester was in the lead with 66 points.
Final Category – U.S. Companies
The Allan Herschell Company founded in North Tonawanda, NY in 1915 specialized in making what amusement park ride – which is also featured in a Rochester, NY museum? A bit of debate but got this. Final standings changed a bit, OITLN wound up tied with us for third, so we had to answer this tiebreaker: As of January, 2017, how many new episodes of “South Park” have been made? Both Mike from OITLN and I misunderstood the question to mean “how many new episodes have been made SINCE 2017, but my guess was a bit closer, so we won a $10/third place prize. Even the bartender Jamie misunderstood the question in exactly the same way! StacyI think the top team is one of your Tuesday McShane’s teams, but did not investigate! So maybe they will be vying for that cash jackpot thingie tonight? That’s all for now, look for our next recap Thursday afternoon. As always, Go Pods, and stay classy, Ian Fleming! The guy who wrote the book “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang,” which we missed in the halftime…
