Trivia Recap – Aug. 31, 2017 – Wurst Bar

Today’s trivia recap is dedicated to bar violence! There are a couple of reasons for this – one, we had a question about a very violent 1989 film called “Road House” in our trivia game Wednesday night at The Wurst Bar hosted by Stacy. Two, I heard rumors that violence recently broke out at a trivia game when “shenanigans” were called on a difficult question. This means someone asked that a new question be asked because of a question that possibly everyone got wrong, and if another team says “no,” then the crappy question stands. All I’m hearing are rumors, but it it seems a fist fight broke out over trivia “shenanigans!” Why was I not there for a front-row seat? I’m not going to lie. I’ve been downright pissy when our team calls shenanigans only to have some other smart-ass team say they’re denying the shenanigans. In fact, I gave so much stink eye – and stink mouth – that the team that denied the shenanigans bought us a round of expensive tequila shots. Now to our credit, we never confronted or approached the team that did this – we just might’ve gotten…a little vocal. Whiskey is a hell of a drug! 🙂 Apart from dumping a beer on a guy’s head once, (he instigated this by dumping my own beer on me) I’ve never, ever been violent in a bar. Well, there was that time I back-handed a guy for calling me a “tall drink of water.” But hey, I was 21, and he wound up buying ME a drink! OK, OK, maybe I do have a bit of a temper! Seriously, I’m pretty much a “happy drunk!” But it’s probably a good idea to not rouse my inner bear! Try waking me up suddenly in the wee morning hours and it’s pretty much like waking a hibernating bear (I have witnesses). That’s what I love about bears. They’re smart, they’re strong, they’re damn cute, and everyone wants to buy a stuffed one for babies, loved ones, etc. But bears are bad-ass – they will straight up kill you if given the chance! Sure, they’re cute when they’re capering around at the circus on the little bikes, breaking into trash cans at national parks (OK, maybe that’s not so cute), but a sizable grizzly can maul you TO DEATH! And even the smaller black bears, which you will find in some parts of Michigan, can do some damage too. Some backcountry camp sites have “bear poles” for which to hang your food bags to keep bears away. We found a covered Thermos container lying on a Lake Superior beach that a black bear had literally ripped open with its claws. When we found way too much bear crap by a place we were going to camp for the night, we hiked on to the next camp site! Pro tip? DO NOT get between a mama bear and her cubs! Ah, bears – cute and deadly! What’s not to love? Now about polar bears…they have been known to be able to sniff out a seal den through at least 10 feet of packed snow, break into the seal dean and bam, seal casserole is served! I’m getting just a little too excited talking bears and violence, aren’t I? Unfortunately, no violence broke out at our trivia game Wednesday! Though it was a pretty horrific game for us. Read on to find out more, if you dare. We finished with no prizes, blew the final question. SPOILERS! But you already knew that, didn’t you?
Round One
1. Advertising – beginning in 1986, what motel chain used the slogan “We’ll leave a light on for you?” 5
2. Islands – The island state of Tasmania belongs to what country? 3
3. Habits- Snuff is the powdered version of what addictive substance? 1
And this is one of only two perfect rounds.
Round Two
1. Musicals – In what decade was “West Side Story” set? 5
2. Writing Utensils – What does HB stand for when printed on a pencil? 3
3. Quotes – What two-time Oscar nominee and multiple daytime Emmy winner said this about shoes – “I still have my feet on the ground – I just wear better shoes?” Came so close on this, but nope – we went with a similar person who has an Emmy, Oscar, Grammy and a Tony. The follow-up question wanted to know who said this quote- “Always forgive your enemies – nothing annoys them so much.” Got neither part correct. And that’s a really, really good quote! 😉 This was our first “tell” that this would be a terrible game for us!
Round Three
1. TV – What sitcom, which originally aired from 1998 to 2006, will return for a ninth season with new shows in 2017? Debated quite a lot here, eliminating several possibilities, but in the end, this question was all Brad…he can be such a smarty pants sometimes!
2. Sports – Winning both in the 1980s, who is the only NFL quarterback to have started in and won two Super Bowls, being eligible for the Hall of Fame but not being in the Hall of Fame? Miss for 1.
3. Presidents – What was Ronald Reagan’s middle name?
An easy question to end this round.
Halftime – In 2008, Rolling Stone magazine released its list of the top 100 artists of all time, including Beatles, Elvis Presley, Rolling Stones, Chuck Berry and Bob Dylan. Name any four of the next seven entries on the list, one of which is a band.
We only got one of these correct. But we were the only team in the bar to get ANY of these correct! Tough round!
Scores: Eight teams, scores 8 to 27 with us in the top spot. Ick…
Round Four
1. Medical Conditions – The deficiency of what element can lead to a goiter? Newsletter clue, 6.
2. TV – After Carroll O’Connor left “All in the Family,” he went on to star in a TV series that shared its name with what film that won best picture? 4
3. Museums – One of the largest natural history museums in the world is named for a department store founder who was the museum’s first benefactor? 2
Round Five
1. Baseball – (editorial – another sportsball question? These are KILLING us tonight!) Who was the only baseball player to win batting titles in three different decades – 1976, 1980 and 1990? Nope, miss for 2.
2. Scientists – What chemist discovered a cure for rabies in 1885? 4
3. Movies – What was the name of the bar that was the focus of activities in the 1989 Patrick Swayze film “Road House?” Look at the imdb entry for this film, the key words are particularly interesting – “bikini | leg spreading | female removes her dress | female removes her clothes | mini skirt.” Show of hands, who wants to watch this movie now? 🙂 We missed this for SIX. There were a couple of teams who got this right. When we found out the answer, we thought it sounded like something that belonged in a toilet. Seriously, I think it would hilarious to watch this movie while getting a nice strong buzz! Take a drink every time someone takes a swing at each other! You’ll be drunk within 15 minutes! Ahh, Road House…Patrick Swayze never really did much for me, but Sam Elliott has longish hair in this one and swings it around while he’s beating the crap out of unruly bar patrons (wistful sigh). Almost makes me feel better about blowing six points on this question!
Round Six
1. Populations – To the nearest million, what was the population of the United States in the 1790 Census? Nope, miss for 2.
2. Bankers – I did a really, really terrible job of writing down this question. So I will visit the wikipedia page and see what I can come up with for y’all – What American financier and banker who dominated corporate finance and industrial consolidation in late 19th and early 20th Century United States also arranged the merger of Edison General Electric and Thomson-Houston Electric Company to form General Electric?
3. Fire – How many matches are there in a standard book of matches? Miss for 4. FORTY NINE POINTS! This is a record low for us! Boo!
Scores – Eight teams, 20 to 57, with Jazz in first. We were in fourth with 49 points. Team Pants was in second with 52, staffed by a “soloist.” Taking a cue from us, lol? Let’s see if this pays off (SPOILER – it does…it does…)
At 535 feet tall, what college, located in an Eastern U.S. state, features the “Cathedral of Learning,” the tallest such building in the western hemisphere? Had the right state, picked the wrong college…
Team Pants wound up taking first, unsure who the others were. Until next time, which will be Saturday, so look for a recap sometime Sunday afternoon. I have to work Sunday (sigh….again), so the recap won’t be posted until late afternoon. Happy Labor Day weekend in advance to everyone! Go Pods, and stay classy, you rascally patrons at the Double Deuce!
